Joel David - Welcome to BYC - Cute chicks. Six is a good number and you can always add more

Mahonri & Carol (and anyone else interested - The eggs are officially in lockdown. I have temps stable at 100.2 - that gives me a tiny bit of leeway for it to cool down to 99 at night (may or may not do that). Humidity is 60% - doesn't seem to want to go any higher. There is even a light layer of water on the bottom of the aquarium (from the filter/sponge).

We candled them first. Some were so dark or full of chick, that we couldn't see any movement. We did see movement in some and as far as I can tell, they all look good. This shows the size of of most of the aircells (this particular egg was very easy to see into -still had space in the egg and the chick was definitely moving (BW or W ameraucana).

I know it doesn't look that great, but this is the hatcher I designed for the aquarium incubator - made it today. It's made out of 'sterilized' plastic garden racks. I wanted to keep my purebred ameraucanas separate from the EEs & mixed ameraucanas. Mahonri - the 7 BW & W ameraucana eggs are on the right - the rest of the eggs are on the left. I used a piece of the plastic rack to cover my fan & light (for the chicks' safety and another piece to divide them. All sharp edges that are within reach of the chicks have been covered with electrical tape. The whole thing is sitting right on top of a metal grate, so their feet won't fall through. The plastic is softer than the metal grate so I thought that would be easier on the eggs once they started moving around -plus it was easy to prop them with the big end up using the holes in the plastic rack.

Here you can see the 6" x 10" container that is filled with water and a sponge and a filter from a humidifier rolled up on the bottom (used as a second sponge). I can add water to the filter through the tube that runs out the top of the incubator. It overflows the filter some, but doesn't hurt anything - nothing electrical is on the bottom.

I love it!

I have a 150(?) gallon tank with 5 fish in it. I want to turn it into a plant propegator..but now I could use it as a incubator!

The DH will be so thrilled, AZDC! I'll let him know it was your idea.

Now you're being like me... and blaming your bator ideas on someone else

I have a tank too and I HATE the fish... they need to go and the tank needs to be for seedlings. I STILL haven't gotten all that I want started.

Laree - how are your eggs doing? Due on the 1st, right? Happen to have any eye candy for us (me)??

Dude. The bator in the garage WAS my idea. I am just diabolical enough to make you think it was your idea. You have been bamboozled!

Double dude--they are eggs. They don't do much.

Your impatience is wearing off on me.

The chicks that I got from Brenda are so stinking friendly that they started flying up on my arms and shoulders when I go outside. It's super cute now, but I'm not sure about four 8 lb birds jumping up on my arm when they're older... maybe I'm letting them learn a bad habit... but it's just so darn cute!!
