Arizona Chickens

So another member gave me this thread for Arizona memebers which is great. I had my chicks outside today all day for the first time. They are pretty much fully feathered but I am worried about leaving them outside all night. Do you think it will be okay? When I checked on them today late in the day they looked like they were pretty hot almost like they were panting. I immediately took them out of the coop and over to the grass side of the house where it is shaded and the four of us hung out over there for a while and they had a blast. I put some cover over the front to give them more shade. Is it going to be too hot to have them outside for as young as they are?

I have been researching backyard chickens for a couple of months now, and I think I am ready to enter the wonderful world of backyard chickens. I live in Northern AZ, and plan to start with 3-4 hens. I'd like to get them as chicks - my daughters would love to hold them and interact with them.

My question: Has anyone purchased chicks from Olsen's Grain? I am wondering if that is a good place to buy chicks.... are they healthy, hardy, etc? I am looking at Black Stars, Buff Orpingtons, or Rhode Island Reds.

Thank you for any information!
Jennifer

Those chicks that I saw in the pics in the other thread will be fine in your coop at night. I have chicks the same age and they are outside with no heat light now. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water during the day. I saw where someone had mentioned to you in your original thread about using sand in your coop. You can do that but as you know it gets really hot here. Have you ever walked barefooted across hot sand? Yeah not a good thing. If you choose to use sand be sure its in the shaded places and not where the sun is hitting it constantly.

He's not on the forum, yet. I am working on him. I hatched those quail you see in the basket, and have 26 more of his eggs in the incubator now. (part of the reason for Saturday's incubator scramble.) He's a super-nice guy

Tricketts and delphinium!!

I found an incubator to borrow, and my new incubator showed up Friday. All the eggs are in, with the exception of shipment #3. The seller PM'd me because the PO delivered the box of eggs back to her! Not returned...the mail lady saw "hatching eggs" on the side and didn't really read the shipping label. She thought she'd do her a favor, and bring the box directly back to the shippers house

Then Sommer came over and brought me a batch of "birthday chicks". Like I needed more chicks

I heard more garbled crowing this morning. If anyone wants one of those boys, let me know.

DD and I finished planting the garden yesterday! We noticed several plants already have a ton of aphid like bugs on them. So I thought, no problem, we will go get ladybuds... Can't find em!!! Home Depot says they are not getting them in this year and neither is Lowes. What???
After all that rain???

Ditto.

I am pretty sure Baker's Nursery has them now. I was thinking about going there for lunch today. I will let you know if I find some.

I have never purchased ladybugs (all my neighbors spray poisons and the ladybugs come to my garden) but I know if you Google where to buy them you will find Amazon.com and Home Depot.com have them. Good Luck

Welcome, and Happy Monday!

Ditto. Glad to have you aboard. If the chickens look hot make sure they have circulating air, shade and water. Do NOT lock them in a coop that can heat up like an oven.
