Arizona Chickens

I bought a 5 gallon waterer today and the feed lady was nice and charged me the price for the chick crumble even though she gave me turkey. I went out there and gave it to them but they seemed totally uninterested in it. They actually were really noisy tonight more than they ever are, except for when you try to separate them and then they freak out. It is mainly the ameracuana. She seems like the ring leader and the the loudest. One of the buffs is really becoming very sweet and if my son sits in the coop with them she will climb up on his leg and sit with him. It is really too sweet. He fed her some apple tonight but the other ones wouldn't give the apple the time of day. They were being so loud that we finally went inside to see if that would calm them down. As I peeked at them from around the corner they were spending the majority of their time trying to lay on top of each other, almost like they are cold. You don't think it is too cold tonight is it?

well my new incubator is home ...NEEDS to be cleaned it has probably been dirty for 2 years since the last time my friend hatched stuff..

At least my new egg trays haven't ever been used, bright and shiney like they just came out of the box

Ahhhh much better. LOL my son got in there with them and he said mom it is much warmer in here than it actually is outside, so hopefully this will help. Thanks for the advice! As an FYI when I was spying on them a few seconds ago they were eating the crumble as well!!!

Thanks to everyone for the offers of help! I may yet take people up on it, but right now, I think we're going to be ok. We're lucky enough to have a lot of family in the area, as well as very caring neighbors, so I think everything is taken care of.

Sock-This past summer, I think I saw a squirrel running along the powerlines, but it was really late at night and I didn't get a good look. I'll have to keep an eye out, since I live pretty close to you. I'm at Country Club and University.

For those who are wondering, my husband didn't get released today, the doctors decided to run another couple of tests while they had him there, so he'll be coming home tomorrow. I'm disappointed, but its still earlier than we expected, and I'm trying to focus on that. And hope that the baby decides to wait another few days.

Yes, the squirrel came back for a visit yesterday afternoon. The chickens were all freaked out and the squirrel was hanging out with the 5 week olds in their cage. Its after the food and I dont need another mouth to feed.

FYI - not as long as you might think. We listened to the peeping from about 10 am until dinner time and then they stopped. At 11 pm I couldn't wait any longer. I opened the egg and it had already died. Everything was good, yolk absorbed, membrane nice and moist. Not sure why it didn't pip. All others in the bator were dead. Well, one was alive and I put it back in the bator not realizing that it was upside down in the egg. I left it in there until I had opened the others, then went to check on it. I decided to help it get a first breath and started trying to find its head. When I couldn't, I started to realize it was upside down, but I couldn't get the egg open in time to save it. It died.

Penny is still sitting strong. She has 4 yellow babies now. There are 2 pipped Am. eggs that I saw. Interesting how she isn't concerned about keeping them covered. Nothing on the dark eggs I saw. I have a feeling that the money I spent on those shipped eggs is just wasted. I am very upset about that.

Anyway, she apparently thinks there are still hatching babies under there...

Tofu - are you bringing me some chicks?

I keep forgetting you are close to popping. Are you SURE we can't do anything? Maybe do some grocery/feed store runs?

Yes! Please let us help. Do you have someone coming to the hospital with you when the baby comes? Will your husband be able to come? Goodness, I am getting overwhelmed just thinking about it.

We could get some meals in your freezer for you, get the chooks fed, whatever...

Good to know...I may just have to head up there. Darn aphids. Funny story about a ladybug...the other day my 3 year old was out with me in the front yard and starting yelling, "Mom! A big ant!!!" I ran over to him, and it was a ladybug crawling up his leg. LOL He helped me put the ladybug in the tomatoes. Then was very proud of himself. One little guy isn't going to cut it right now though...

Anyone know how much they cost at Baker's?

Oh, and my big box of turkeys *finally* arrived today. I've been on pins and needles since Tuesday. I need to run out to a feed store today and pick up a few chicks though...the turkeys don't have a clue what to do with their food.
