Arizona Chickens

Laree - Thank you again for letting me come by to get the Eggs for Tucson Tofu. I hope I didn't stay too long. I loved meeting your husband and kids and seeing your home and your chicken art collection. I missed the bomb, but enjoyed the posts you put up about it. Oh, the Kholrabi was great! Thank you for giving it to me. The green was was the really tastey one. I definitly need to master the art of growing it. I sliced and grilled it on my George Forman. The pictures you posted were fun. Cool.

Tucson Tofu - Glad the eggs made it down and that the broody has accepted them. They do know how to spread out over their eggs. It has been fun getting to know you in this process.

Thank you all for the congrats on the hatch and for sharing the joy!

Mohonri - enjoy your time away from office and city. Sound lovely!

newchickmom09 - nice to hear from you.

Cap - On the broody hen, you can break or give her fertilized eggs or give her baby chicks. The only thing that has worked for me to break a broody hen is to confine her away from her nest. If she decides the new area is nest worthy and nests there, you'll need to put her in a wire bottom cage. Here's a thread about it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=181289 Last year I had three go broody that I tried to break with ice cubes and or moving them of their nests often...I failed and by the time I broke down and isolated them away from their nests, their combs were very shrunken, almost completely gone and very pale. I was sad as I realized I had failed them by not breaking them. If you want fertilized eggs, some folks might have some that you can procure. I have also read threads of people hatching fertilized eggs from Trader Joes. Somewhere there is a thread that tells how to read the dates on the cartons.

newchickmom09 - My dad thinks I should have some ducks....

HATCH-LING UPDATE:

The nest box Jumbo sat on her eggs in was very small, just enough room for her. When the chicks hatched Mother relocated her to a dog kennel with her babies and 2 eggs that hadn't hatched yet. So, as of that time, we concluded that 15 of 17 eggs had hatched. This morning I could see an empty shell under her, so one more must of hatched. So, that means 16 of 17 hatched ...that we know of ....assuming none of the other eggs had been kicked out of the nest along the way that I missed. Last night I was able to count 13 babies.

that more were out of sight. They are so little! About the size of 4 cotton balls each. Last night they were milling around Momma Jumbo but by the time it was late and dark, all were under her. She is learning how to let them under. This morning I saw 5 or 6 come out. Some are drinking and eating already.

COLOR:
Most are yellow
One is BRIGHT yellow
One is smokey grey
One is pale blue - I didn't know they came in pale blue almost white
One is a chipmunk pattern with stirpe
A couple are light brown/tan.

Hoping that all survived the night in the big crowd under their Momma.

It is a happy day. There is something really wonderful about it all.

Oh, the other chicks are almost 4 weeks old and doing well. They are roosting with the big girls now. Momma Squiggles is still watching over them. We have named the three hens: Oreo, Cinnamon (Mom's idea, not a copy from Laree) and Honey.

I see what you meant about the blue one - crazy

And the little tortoise shell looking one is super cute, too!

Our 4 pullets (?) are doing well, growing little combs and growing into their feet. The one I was sure was a roo I'm not so sure about now, and another that I was sure was a pullet I'm not so sure about now, either!

We still need to finish a roof overhang for their coop to help give more shade in the early-mid mornings.....gotta get on that! At least the rest of the day they are protected already. I will try and get some pictures posted so you all can see how big they're getting....

Jumbo came out with the chick's...14 total. 3 eggs unhatched blue, dk brown and a pale brown one. You can see all 14 babies in this picture but the pale blue color doesn't show on the blue one. I have no idea what kind each one is.

I REALLY need to update my page a lot has changed since then. We have our two swedish mix ducks (male & female) and our female is broody right now and should be done at the end of the month. We will be having little quackers waddling around soon.

We have 6 laying hens right now: 1 BA, 1 SLW, 1, GLW, and 3 EE. My GLW is the one that is broody.

Good evening everyone! It has been an eventful 24 hours. Productive too, but *whew* I am beat.

Learning experience story, kinda sad--so skip if you want to:

I had a chick that never thrived, got him for my b-day from Sommer, along with a bunch of others, so 6 weeks old? He keep getting sick, slept all the time, and woulnt open his eyes. Ate well, and had good weight, mostly becuase he never moved around. Anywhoo, I had asked the DH to put him down, but for one reason or another he avoided it. Last night I decided to do it myself, since the DH was out. I failed. The first try broke its neck, but didnt kill it. The second try made it worse. So then I wandered around the neighborhood, bawling like a crazy person, trying to find a "willing" man.

Unfortunately, all the menfolk were out with the DH, at a fundraising event. I went to the neighbor's house--he lends a hand when we process--but he was gone too. His housemate's daughters (16 &19) answered the door, and asked, "Do you know Shane down the street?" and pointed to my house. So then I start to laugh, and cry, and they think I am NUTS. When I explain Shane is my husband, they start crying, and offer to walk me home. I am a big girl, so I declined. It went downhill from there. Long story short, Shane had to come home & help me out.

Then, things got weird. I scrubbed down & went to bed. Then I hear the horrible scratching thumping noise coming from the incubator room. I am CERTAIN it is rats, out to eat my eggies (not that I have ever SEEN a rat here, but i am not thinking straight) and find.....

WOOohOOOOO! One of the turkey eggs hatched, and 8 of Sommer's eggs are pipped!

As of today I have 3 Aloha chicks, 1 turkey, 2 zipping turkeys, and a bunch of other chicks trying to make an appearance.

SO--today I had my other eye fixed, but my appointment wasnt until noon. I had ALL morning to work on everything for the weekend. I managed to:

-Cover the run with bird netting--mostly to keep the chickens in, rather than it being her-birdi-cally sealed against tweety birds.
-Disnfect, scrub, re-sanitize & was the "sick bird" dog crate.
-Make a compost bin, scrape, scoop, and fill.
-pull all the insulation & styrofoam out of the litle dog house, wash it, stain it purple, and set it up for banty nexting box.
-move the inside chicks into the big dog crate (make room for turkeys

)
-Grocery shop, feed store, pharmacy, send MIL & her cousin off to Hawaii, and and clean the house

Pretty productive, all in all. Learned lots...even if I didnt want to.

Not much going on here....found a little dog yesterday, kept him overnight and now my boss is looking after him.....Everyone here got a bit to attached though, kinda miss the little guy. Oh well, still looking for his real owners, wish he was microchipped and we could have found them right away..

Hi everyone!

Two funny updates:

I heard two squeaky crowing attempts today from our 6 week olds! I couldn't tell who the culprit was, though. One was when all 4 were together out of sight, and another was when I could see two of them and know that at least the second crow wasn't those two.... and the squeaky voice sounded the same. So unless we've got 2 roos in four with the same voice, it looks like the culprit is either 'Sofa' the wyandotte lap chicken or "Aggro" the ex-pasty butt Bantam (still don't know what type, although he/she has blue skinned legs!). Hmm......I love a good mystery! Between those two, though, it's probably not much of a mystery if aggression is a factor.

Another funny happening - as we were putting the roof framing in place, Meaty, the friendliest one was over with us watching everything we were doing. She kept looking up and my boyfriend & I thought she wanted to get up on the framing. Instead she flew up to his shoulder and immediately sat down to roost!
lol.png

I really wish I had my camera! She was very content and made it well known how satisfied she was there with a lot of little happy noises. I felt bad dislodging her, but when I plucked her off, she immediately wiggled out of my hands and up to to my shoulder to do the same thing
