Arizona Chickens

Cheerful, what a cute batch you got! How awesome! :3 All are healthy right?

Pd2phx, isn't it funny to see the wheels turning but to not know which way they are going? XD

AZKat and I went to lunch at the Cornish Pastie (is that it?), Sprouts and then hit the Mesa Feed Barn. Lunch was fantastic and I always like relaxed atmospheres.
We went to the feed barn for a bale of straw, grit and some feed. The straw was everywhere in the car. I am still cleaning it. Haha.
:O Katherine is a chicken enabler, officially! We went into the brooder room and I picked out a Delaware and Brahma.

New wrinkle in cyberland. . . .doing the "unsubscribe" - "resubscribe" thing no longer working. . . .I'm going to have to use a "low tech" solution, like a post it note on my computer reminding me to check the site!

Autumn has been, to her great distress, installed in a wire bottom portable coop. . . .the one I used for the chicks when they were just babies. . . .I'm hoping that she soon conquers the broodiness and can rejoin the flock. . .she isn't happy, and that's difficult for me, but looks like that's the way it's got to be. Anyone able to inform me of a likely "timeline" to stop the broodiness? Thanks, Carol

it takes mine 2-3 days. Depending on how long they have been broody and how determined they are. At night is when I put them in the wire bottom cage and during they day the free range the yard but are not able to get into the coop to sit in the nest. So that way they are active and eating.

When I first broke Basil of her broodiness she stayed in the cage the first night let her out to free range during the day and then the second night I went to put her in the cage and she was already in there all settled and ready for bed. Got to love that girl. She is the best, sweetest, hen. Love cochins.

I'm back, you all have been busy.

Lost 5, 4 week old chicks. Cat got at least 4 (including my little polishX pullet) The one night I don't put them to bed like I always do. Don't know what happened to the other one.

CH2: They are all beautiful! Sorry you had 3 quitters, looks like the roo was doing his job and that broody did a fantastic job. Looks like you got a decent # of purebreds. They'll be beautiful. Still trying to figure out which one gave you the blue chick... if it came out of a white egg, it's the ancona and the striped one probably came out of a white one as well light brown leghornX.

Well, I just lost my carefully crafted post. Ok, it wasn't that good...but still.. so here goes again!

Thank you all for the kind words on my new hatch. It has been a wonderful experience!

newchickmomma09 - glad to know you now have happy chicken news.

SockPuppet - I am sure it is hard to let them go. The ad is good. Made me want them. Did notice $5 at the top but didn't see that inside the ad. Maybe I missed it.

Laree - So sorry for your sad story. So glad for the happy hatch! Impressed by all you got done!

Enjaytoo - how kind of you to watch over the lost dog. I hope all turns out well for it.

pdx2phx - great story. Love it! What a sweet moment.

RRR - congrats on the new birds! Glad you had fun at lunch.

cap1717 - on broodies - 2-3 days should do it. It is distressing when the birds are upset. On subscribe/unsubscribe issue...have you checked your junk mail? Are you careful when you click on the links in the emails to not click on unsubscribe? Obvious, I know, but it is quite a mystery and sometimes back to basics pays off...sometimes. Hope you get it sorted out.

Monhonri - welcome back. So sorry about your lost chicks. Thank you for posting though, I have wondered about cats. The chicks are happy and healthy today. Blue is loosing some of the blue wash. All are eating and drinking and milling around. Jumbo is a good momma hen.

AZKat - glad to hear from you and that your and RRR had a fun day.

Mahonri - how old were the chicks? Stupid cat

My other silkie went broody, so they are sharing the eggs. I'm glad I put all 7 under the first broody! It is cute, any time an egg is poking out from under one hen the other one snatches it. They did really good sharing chicks the first time around, so I'm hoping for similar results this time.

Might I suggest a Havahart trap, or some other type of humane trap for the kitties.

Cheerful~ Thanks for the kind words on the lost dog. We miss the little bugger, but I guess my boss wants to keep him if the owner is not found. A little bit sad about that, in an odd way. Oh well, I just posted another Found ad on CL so we'll see...

Today, Jean Grey (one of my Buckeyes) started acting broody again, and unlike last time, she stayed on the nest instead of heading to the roost with everyone else. I think that I'm going to give her a couple of days worth of eggs, and see what I get.

Mahonri- Sorry to here about the chicks, that sucks! I know you put a lot of energy into those chicks.

Laree-Sorry about the botched dispatch but whoo congrats on the Turkeys and chicks.

To all that have broody hens and chicks right now good luck and how fun.

I picked up Miss Basil Blue and her three chicks from SockPuppet on my way home from work, she is so fun. I love watching her and the chicks. Everyone was free ranging in the yard when I got home so we just let them mingle. She had to tell the pullets what for a couple times just so they would know who's big mama and after that they just steered clear and tried not to look threatening

. I put a dog kennel with an nest box in it in the run but I think I'll let every one mingle again tomorrow and decide if they need the kennel or not. Darlene it was nice meeting you and seeing your chickens.
