Arizona Chickens

I got my eggs and day-old chicks from a breeder in GIlbert... I don't believe she vaccinates at all. She's on Craigslist, though she just rearranged her breeders to make more sex-links and isn't doing any more of the breeds I want right now. *pout* One each of my light Brahmas and Delawares better be girls...

I've been thrown up on more times than I can remember. And my littlest is only 8 months and hasn't gotten sick yet, so there's more to come. Good times.

I got my first 12 chicks from Julie in Gilbert as well. Cluckin got her first chicks from there too. She does not vaccinate as far as I know.

I would love another Delaware, since mine is a mutt. Heck, she could be a brahma-mutt from J too- ya never know. I got my chicks the day after J set up her breeding pens.

Maybe they just need some time to adjust to the weather change...

ETA - they say NOT to give scratch and high starch foods in the hot part of the day as it raises their body temp or something. Not sure if that is relevant, but something I have been thinking about.

My broody is siting on eggs from Julie right now-- but they're surprises, because she had just switched her breeders around and wasn't sure which eggs were fertilized by who. So I either have EEs, AMs, RSL, BSL, or one of a few purebreds that I forgot to ask about. There are at least 3 blue eggs, and her roo and one of the hens are Ameraucanas but the other 3 hens are EEs so who knows?

I have 2 week-old LBs, 5 week-old SLWs, and 2 Week-old Delawares... I have NO idea how to tell gender on them until they are much older, but I better get some pullets!

Maybe-- although I've lived here my entire life and I still sweat in the heat (and my dogs still pant)... isn't it the same thing? DH is going to build a shade structure addition to the coop this weekend so hopefully that will help some more.

Oh and thanks for the scratch reminder. I still let my little girls throw some out early in the morning, but not during the day. I didn't realize about the starch though-- I just gave them some bread a while ago.

The EE/aloha just hatched but I think something is wrong. The inside of the egg is bloody, and there is a little bloody lump sticking out of his butt

Pastry - Sorry about the embarrassing topic... as for the chicks, why don't you buy from someone locally?
newchickmom09 - Hooray for silkies!

macmama - I think they'll hatch, mine are and we had those 108 days... this weekend will be cooler.

My two broodys are still faithfully sitting on the nest-I really hope that they manage to get something to hatch. I candled a few days ago, and another one had quit, but five still looked good. I noticed today, when I went out to check on their water, that they weren't really sitting on the eggs, they were crouched over them, so that their lower feathers were just barely touching the eggs. If the eggs don't hatch, I'm not going to blame my broodys, because they seem to be doing a great job.

Because I have a chick addiction, um, I mean, because I want to make sure they have something to raise, I ordered the 25 chick assortment that MPC has on sale right now. Once they show up, I'll be posting the ones I don't want on Craigslist. If anyone here wants chicks next week (they are shipping on the 14th), PM me. I have no idea what I'll be getting, MPC has a pretty large selection. People who have gotten the assortment have reported lots of Leghorns, Barred Rocks, RIR, and a few people have gotten Australorps and Blue Andalusians. I feel like a kid at Christmas, not knowing what is going to be under the tree.

Laree, I'm sorry to hear about your sickly chickens. That really sucks. Hopefully it will clear up? Good luck. <3

Sorry about missing a bunch of posts. I'm leaving in two hrs for Philly/New Jersey and I'll be back in a week. Packing has been scarey. Lol.
I am trying to keep a positive outlook on this trip, it feels strange traveling and often I turn it negative by focusing profusely on the set backs.

Does anybody want any souvenir maybe? I'm already buying a spoon for a friend. The beach might have some great shells! Should I bring a bag back?

Have fun all! PS: Katherine, when I get back we can go to Sprouts or wherever. Awesome news about your your addic *cough* love for raising animals.
I'll bring something back awesome for your family.

Wish my pilot luck.

Guess it was bound to happen eventually.

Looks like my neighbors are putting me out of chicken raising.

So if you want to know what I have and what I'll let it go for PM me.
I'll say this, I have a lot of great birds.

Only folks here could possibly know how devastating this is to me.

It's a long story but it goes way beyond the chickens and I'm not going to do a public rant so....
