Arizona Chickens

My grandparents had turkeys when I was a kid. We use to catch grasshoppers in the field across the street and feed them to the turkeys.
I really liked the turkeys. I would love to have one, but I'm pretty sure it would end up being a pet.

We are very excited! Two chicks hatched out today from the eggs we got for our broody hen. Yay! She still has eight more eggs to go.

I enjoyed the story of the mother hen teaching her chicks to roost.

(extended family illness got in the way)
We might wait until the fall now, though. The chickens are free-ranging the yard eating bugs (as we speak) and I don't know if the meal worms will survive in the garage in this heat!

I too look forward to feedback on this one.

Wow Laree... looking good in your back yard!

and thanks for the delivery offer.. I may take you up on it one of these days since you are always coming down her for work anyways..

off to meeting, my son will be waiting for Noskiveez DH to put the chicks under the broody.

My hatch wasnt the greatest this time. It was about a 50% hatch. I sent 3 Amerucana chicks to Mahonri's. One was very cute. It has big cheek puffs already. I'm putting my silkie eggs in and keeping my fingers crossed for a nice buff chick.

We have been through a couple of stages on the mealworms (the king size ones), but are still working on it.

We set aside some of the worms, watched them change into the weird pupae creature thingies (high-tech biology terms I know) and then watched those change into beetles. I am out of town for work for a couple of months so I need to ask how the beetle 'business' is coming along....we were waiting for them to get friendly

Do turkeys lay tasty eggs?

Congrats to everyone with new chicks! Also, I'm amazed some people are still getting eggs with all this heat!

pdx2phx - you need to make a BYC page showing how to raise mealworms!

Laree - Cool backyard! And the quilt is adorable!

My two year old took 6 hours to fall asleep the other night, and 4 hours last night. Things are getting ridiculous. We have tried every routine, read books, looked at websites, talked to his doctor, and done everything except for let him cry it out. He still wakes up 5 times a night and cries until we comfort him and get him back to sleep. Today I tried to lay him down for his nap and he was especially cranky. I hugged him until he stopped crying and then he bit me. I told him we don't bite, so he started crying again... then he started pounding his head on the wall. I got up, told him I love him, and walked out. He cried for an hour and then fell asleep! On his own!

I feel like I've discovered something! I feel guilty and like a terrible mom, but yay! Maybe an end to this madness! I think he's going to get to cry it out tonight, too. I'm nervous!

Thank you so VERY MUCH. All three were beautiful. Nice to meet your DH and daughter. I was just getting ready to go teach my class in Spanish so my #4 son got them in a box with starter and a waterer and made sure they all had a drink.

The broody is a bit temperamental. We had to wait till dark, I'll go out sometime later this evening to see if they are OK. I'll feel badly if she kills them, but I waited for a little while after I put them under her and they were peeping and she was clucking so we'll see. It's just so dang hot in that coop, I've got to get an new AC unit. I suppose that's why it only cost $99 last year and I didn't do as Rufus said and run it a little bit every week to keep things in tune.

In the morning I'll take them all outside and see how she does with them.

If it works I promise I'll post something!

It sure has seemed to take a long time, but then my honey and I haven't been probably the most attentive to the little buggies. One weird observation - the worms are vaguely musty smelling, the pupae thingies flat-out stink, but the beetles actually smell good in a strange way....they smell sweet and floral almost. Bizarre!!

Not that I'm sniffing bugs, mind you, but it's hard not to notice when I take the tops of their various containers
