Arizona Chickens

On the topic of roosters (and getting it on), when do they stop trying to rape the ladies and start being gentlemen? He even steals treats from the pullets. Is he permanently going to be a jerk?

They should start figuring it out around 7-8 months. If the over-amorous roo is getting mean, you can crate him for a few days, and knock him down on the pecking order. but if you crate one, and not the other, you may end up with one "for sure" dominant rooster. Then your lesser roo is reduced to sneak-attack mating. So....pick your course of action carefully, based on your set up.

If it is possible to give one roo his set of girls, and anther roo a set of girls---and then keep them seperate---you'll have a happier flock overall.

Does anyone know how to get rid of extra roos? I have at least 3 1-month-old roos, and they need to go asap. I put them up on Craigslist for free but so far I haven't heard anything.

They are SLWs by he way, and I might be adding a Delaware soon. One of my "pullet's" combs is starting to sprout rather quickly.

I'm in GIlbert on the QC border. Thanks for any help!

I just put this roo up on CL.

I have a couple of others also.

Don't know why it takes so long for the add to appear?

Ooh-- good idea. Maybe it's because mine are only a month old? I just put the ad up several days ago... hopefully someone will contact me soon. Higley Feed is really close to my house-- I'll check there.

Hi Everyone. . ..nothing to report here. . . .all is well in "peluso poultry land". . . .but just a few thoughts for those of you losing chickens due to the heat. . . .last year my girls were really stressed, they were in a small coop run combo, they had shade, water a mister every day during the summer they got frozen blue ice packs to stand or sit on.

This summer, with their new, much larger coop run structure, they still have shade and a mister (on the hottest afternoons), they have several shallow pans that I fill with clean water several times a day, a couple of "muddy patches" (unintentional, but they seem to enjoy them) and the only time I have seen any "panting" at all is when they are in the nest boxes, laying. . . ..they much larger area plus the multi layered shade (large Eucalyptus tree, shade screen and of course the coop with two open (screened) sides and a solid roof, seem to be giving them plenty of options for keeping comfy. . . .most afternoons they are "hanging out" under the tree on the damp ground, but move freely in and out of the coop, where there food and additonal water are kept. If I was not so lucky to have this very nice set up, I would not hesitate to offer the blue ice packs again. . . .they loved them last year. . . .I put them (one large one for each chook) out in the am before work, and replaced them with new (still frozen) ones in the afternoon when I returned home. . . .and most importantly, everyone made it through the summer without incident. Happy 4th of July to all. . . .Carol

Hey all. Stopped getting my notifications again...

Mahonri - is that the roo that grew up at my house???? he is gorgeous! My mean rooster is pretty like that, but Wheaten.

On extra roosters - Someone on this forum once said that there is room in a flock for 1 rooster for every 10 hens. That leaves 9 out of 10 roosters without a job. When I started thinking about that, I realized that no one wants extra roosters. We are just passing them around so we don't have to know what became of them. I, personally, think that unless they are breeding/show quality roosters, it is best to let them feed you after you have fed them for so long. JMO.

I haven't butchered mine, yet, but if someone is interested in the process, I would be happy to have company/ help when I do it. My PM box is full. Sorry. You can email me though.

Noskiveez,- did I miss the opportunity on the chicks? Pretty sure my broody isn't going to give up. I don't really have a place for her yet, though.

Anyone else expecting babies in the next 2 weeks? SLWs???

Gckidd... the roo in the pic is not the one that grew up at your house... it's his bunk mate.

My kids REALLY want me to teach them how to process the roo we got from you. I'm ready to send him to the neighborhood to the south.

My boys favorite hen has gone broody what should I do? I have moved her inside to the kitchen table but I'm afraid if I break her broody that I'll just end up stepping on her or her nest.
