I lost a chick to the heat then lost a pullet the day before. Its looking like as the girls crests get bigger, they vet blinder and blinder. I think the pullet died because she couldn't find the water. Poor girl.

Oh dear. So sorry. I do appreciate you sharing though. I have 3 babies that look like they might have crests. Good to be aware of potential problem.

If you've got any of those food feeders that have the holes for them to vet food out of, the have a hard time getting food from those too. A silkie taught me that. Only the weird odd things happen to me.

I know Morning Glory is a weed but it would be awesome if I could get it to grow on the fence. I'll have to keep an eye on it, if it starts spreading I'll chop it all out. I didn't know it could actually kill trees! My sister is on vacation and said she'd bring me some seed packets

Cheerful - thank you for offering to have your dad dig up some starts for me! I'll try the seeds first. I don't want to harass the poor guy too often :) Also, I love your vanishing/reappearing chicken story.

a2ms4chickens - it sounds like the vacationer came back and decided to take a vacation from his chickens, too. That was nice of you to watch them for him.

NoSkiveez - I love the hair-tie idea! Please post pictures!

cluckin_crazy - I can't wait to see foreign chicken pictures!

newchickmom09 - I'm sorry about the duck, you are lucky to have such a nice neighbor. I hope the little chicken is a pullet for you! It always seems like the favorite ones are roosters.

BROODY HEN UPDATE:
I am sooooo happy. My broody hens are broken from their broodiness!!!! That cage was worth every penny. I bought a large dog kennel ... wire kind... at WalMart, turned it upside down so the smaller screen was on the bottom. Set in the spare bathroom across the tub. Put towels around to protect the tub and catch the poop and put the two broody hens in there with water and food. I left them there for only 2.5 days. Last night I let them out at 7:30, just before dusk. They went to bed with the rest of the chickens (not in their nests) and this morning they were out and about (not in their nests). Yippeee!!!

We NEED PICS!!

Walked into the coop this afternoon and my Light brown leghorn was laying down lifeless.

I took her out set her upright and put the sprinkler on her. I don't know if she'll make it, but she was blinking and moving a little.

It is amazing how much smarter the polish get when they can see...

From LareeLand:

Got up this morning before the sun, and was working in the yard by 4:30. All the neighborhood roos were going nuts (like normal).

From the coop I hear Patchwork, "RAH ra-Rah ROOOOOO!!!!"
From the run I hear Cinnabun (he likes to sleep outside), "Ra ra-Ra ra-Ra RooOOOOOOOOO!!!"

[short pause]

From the turkey/chick brooder I hear the MF D'uccle, "Beep-bo-beep Boooo!"

The other roos in the neighborhood just laaaaaauuughed.
