Arizona Chickens

Mahonri- I am so sorry to hear about your friend. My prayers will be with his wife, family and friends.

Nothing exciting to report in our chicken world. I have 2 broody's sitting on eggs that are due to hatch next week. We'll see what happens.

All of our chickens are surviving with lots of water, and shade.

The thermostat on my neighbor's incubator turned out to be broken, so today I slipped the rest of the eggs under the broody. 18 is a lot for her, but I figure the weather is in her favor as far as keeping them warm goes. And otherwise, they'd have no chance.

You gave me 15, but that day my girls laid three that I put under her. One was laid by my current broody, one was laid by my Barred Rock and the other was laid by my Blue Andalusian. I decided to use the broody's eggs because I'm wanting to breed broodiness into my flock, and the Blue Andalusian is by far my best layer.

I went out there tonight, and she was somehow managing to cover all of them. How, I don't know, but she's a determined girl.

AZKat~ When my GLW was broody she kept stilling everyones eggs and I would go out there and lift her up to see her covering over 15 eggs. My poor broody set in a hot nesting box for almost 2 months straight before I was able to get her chicks. They can be determined!

Hoe everyone is have a gerat morning so far and keep cool!

Good morning, all!

I still have the 3 broodies. The two sizzles and my ugly EE/Delaware mix named "Nosey". They are taking turns being co-broodies, and seem to switch nests everyday. There is always 2 broodies in one box (usually a big and a little chicken) and then the third in the second box. I wouldnt worry about it any more than that, except one nest is bigger than the others, so the sizzles have a hard time covering all the eggs. If Nosey wasnt so evil, I would re-distribute the eggs more evenly. Oh well. Maybe I will get out the welding gloves and do that when I candle this weekend.

You see co-broodies on BYC all the time...but I worry the ladies will fight over the chicks when they hatch. Thoughts?

Hello All,

So not caught up here since i have been out of town and sick just before that, but had pressing business to chat about.

So I had three roosters start crowing while we were gone on vacation...

One - Black-grey Frizzled Silkie REALLY CUTE guy I WISH i could keep him!

Two - Partridge Silkie roo

Three- My Blue Wheaton Americauna Roo... He has a blue beard i dont know if that us uncommon or not but different from the pictures i have seen..

Tofuranch has dibs as she indicated she wanted them a while ago but cant seem to reach her and need to move them quickly since they were crowing quite a lot.

But if she doesn't want them anyone else have any intrest??

Laree-My co-broodies didn't fight at all, they just worked together to take care of the chicks. From what I read on BYC that is pretty typical. It was actually pretty interesting to watch. At first, they both stuck to the chicks like glue, all the time. When they were a couple of weeks old, they started occasionally going in separate directions, and one chick would go with Betsey, the BR, and the other would stay with Jean Grey, the Buckeye. The interesting part was that it wasn't always the same chick that went off on their own. Then, about a week ago, Betsey decided that the chicks were old enough, started sleeping on the perch and not really taking care of them, although she'll still protect them a bit. I think that Jean Grey is heading in that direction, especially now that the chicks are starting to sleep on perches.
Someone on here was saying that the co-broody thing is something that is Jungle Fowl do too, and that its a survival thing. If something happens to one mother the chicks still have someone to take care of them, and two broodies means that its easier to care for the chicks. I dunno if that is true or not, but it makes sense.

Becky-Looking at your set up, I'd try adding a perch at the same height as the existing one, on the wall opposite the nest boxes.

Did everyone get rain? I figure everyone in the valley got hammered because I got some here. I like this rain business.

On the homefront...one of my white crested blue polish laid an egg for the first time today. Very exciting! She's the first of the cresteds to start laying and I didn't expect anything from her for at least another month.
