Arizona Chickens

Dofnup-Congrats on the new addition! Babies are awesome. I don't know what you're doing for morning sickness, but a friend of mine who had it badly swore by Emetrol to relieve the symptoms, and my SIL had good luck with starting the day with a bowl of oatmeal. Personally, I found that eating something acidic or sour helped a lot when I got nauseous.

Becky-How have the chickens been settling in to their new home?

Also, I think that it'd be fun to have a meet-up in the Valley. What do people think?

Thanks AZKat

I tried all the tricks that worked with my son (this is my second pregnancy) but to no avail. Even at 17 weeks I'd sometimes get up in the middle of dinner out of the blue to go puke ... it has been 2 weeks since I last had to do that so I am hoping this time it will keep. I am also getting my appetite slowly back so maybe that's also a good sign!

Thanks all for the suggestions, tonight I'm gonna put the sniffling chicken in her own pen, and I'll hit the feed stores for some "meds". Hopefully this passes with no trouble

Dofnup - I feel for you. I had terrible morning sickness with all three of mine. It felt like I had the flu for 8 weeks and spent most of my time in bed.

AZKat - The chickens are getting along great but the EE hasn't laid an egg and the Delaware has only laid two. Does it take awhile for them to start laying when they've been moved? It doesn't matter much to the little girl, but I don't know whether to be concerned or not.

With 7 kids my wife was sick with 5 of the pregnancies (we also had two miscarriages... and those didn't go well either).

I am so grateful those days are over, now it's just working as much as I can to keep that many people alive.

Congrats on the upcoming kiddo!

I have a new computer now to replace the one the kids broke butt I have not been on here much, life is just busy with a bunch of crap no one wants to hear about. I do have a chicken issue to figure out, it seems I have an OCD pullet. This one darn pullet keeps knocking all of the feed out of the feeder. Not in the act of eating mind you but she will sit there and brush out all the feed she can with her beak until the feeder is empty. I need to figure out how to stop this before I head out of town for a week, my neighbor will check on them while I'm gone but I'm sure she doesn't want to have to deal with that crap. My original pullets are all laying now and despite the heat they are cranking out the pullet bullets the only other reliable layer in this heat has been Phylis and her eggs are big so my cartons look pretty funny with all these little eggs and every third or fourth egg dwarfing them.

Becky-From what I've read, it can take hens as much as a month or two to start laying again after a move. Since both of them were laying very sporadically because of the heat already, it may take them awhile to get started again. Once they get settled in and it cools down a bit, they should be regular layers. I'm glad to hear that they are doing well, and getting along with the other EE.

Oh good. I figured that was what was going on.
The other one is a RIR and very young... not laying yet but should be soon by the looks of her.
The girl I took them to is very happy with them and the parents are very relieved to have one less thing to worry about.

Because I know that you're waiting with bated breath, here is the latest Broody Update. I candled the eggs last night, and pulled two that had quit developing. Both of these were from the clutch I found behind the shed, so no great surprise there. This morning, when she was off the nest I looked and there was one egg that had been stepped on (the shell seemed quite thin) that had a fairly well developed chick in it, I'm fairly sure this was one of the other 'shed eggs' but it was a medium brown color, so I'm not positive.

So at the present time, she's sitting on 14 eggs. 2 are Blue Andalusian X Wheaten Ameraucana, 2 are the one's that I found behind the shed, and don't know for sure who laid them, although I think at least one is Silver Laced Wyandotte X Wheaten Ameraucana. 10 are from Mahonri. All of the pure Ameraucana eggs are developing, the rest are brown and I don't remember which was which at this point, and naturally the pencil I used to mark them has rubbed off.

Hatch Day should be Monday, if all goes well I should get a goodly number of chicks. Some of which will be going to Mahonri to put under his broody.

Hope I'm in the right forum for this, since I need a chick vet ASAP. My 6 1/2 week-old Sultan is crossed-beak

and I wanted to know if anyone knows a good avian/chicken vet that won't just trim the beak, but will also show me how to do it. I can't afford to take her in every 2 weeks... I'm on the east side (mid-Scottsdale). Dr. Longmaster is who'll I'll be seeing on Tuesday (he works with Daniel Burke who's supposed to be good with parrots and whatnot, but Burke is unavailable.) If anyone knows a vet that's good at this and will teach me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Meredith

Meredith: I don't know of any good chicken vets... I remember someone talking about one once on here... someone up in the Sunny Slope area that could de-crow a rooster.

AZKat... I'm getting excited to get a couple of chicks for my broody.

Off to teach a class en Español this evening.

Cheers!
