Arizona Chickens

I was reading on the county extension website about gardening things to do in August, and solorizing the soil is one. "Solarize garden soil: Prepare bed for fall planting, irrigate and then cover with clear plastic for six weeks. This will kill or drive out many of the soil pathogens." From http://cals.arizona.edu/maricopa/garden/html/t-tips/august.htm Not sure if this would work with cocci or not.

Tea tree oil is very toxic to birds. Not a good choice for a chicken. There are many better options. The coconut oil should be ok. There is a good chance that she has microscopic mites causing her problems. If it is fungal, lotrimin or one of the other anti-fungal products for athelete's foot should work.

I am drinking this awful protein shake. It is kind of gritty, chocolate. Not very nice. I wish they would make this stuff in bacon flavor.

When I was pregnant with the twins I had to increase my protien levels dramatically. I didn't like the shakes, so I would put a scoop of ice cream in it to give it a better texture. Low fat yogurt works well too. They actually become enjoyable.

Hello everyone! I have been absent for a while. The kiddos started school and I have to go to the school three times a day since I have a kindergardener and a preschooler. That seems to keep me busy. My internet has been acting up terribly! I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Qwest trying to get there mess straightened out so I would have the internet.

The birds are all doing well. The hens are still laying like champs everyone is giving me 6 eggs a week. My oldest female duck has stopped laying, but I am hoping her daughter will start soon she is almost old enough.

It has been so hot and dry until last night. We got a good soaking last night.

Hope eveyone who is having neighbor troubles can work things out. I don't understand why no one can talk to anyone any more they just put in complains instead of trying to work things out. What a pain!

Well, where were you when I asked for advice on this before??? Hmmm??

So what are the better options?

I have read good and bad about tea tree oil. Lots of people use it and have no problems. Technically speaking, it is toxic to anyone who doesn't use it with caution. It is a beneficial oil, but, like any other essential oil, should be used very sparingly and in the context of another oil, like coconut or olive or some other dilution.

So far so good on the pullet. Hoping she will recover. She looks awful!

) and thundered from about 6 o'clock on through the night. Slowed down to a steady rain sometime after 9. After the initial onslaught (where I got thoroughly soaked moving and covering chickens), I finally got the raingauge set out in the yard. It measured 3/4 inch this morning, and it MUST have rained at least 1/4 before I put it out.

We had irrigation early yesterday morning (starting about 4:30), so the yard is super steamy right now.

If you like pumpkin seeds, they are really high in protein.

I think most of the time complaining neighbors don't really know each other at all; they aren't really neighbors, just strangers who live near each other. And if you don't know your neighbor, you don't know if they are someone who is actually a nice or reasonable person, or someone who is likely to go into a postal rage. And so it's safer to let the officials deal with it.
