Whoo hoo! First marans hatched 3 other eggs have pipped. I was kind of surprised to see the chick came out of an egg that had no cracking and 10 minutes later I looked in and it was there. Its still wet and flopping around.

Thanks Gallo del Cielo for the heads up.

My neighbor has 2 Dachsuns. The other day they found one of the Dachsuns hiding out in the desert behind the house. They couldn't figure out how he got out there because they have a 6 foot fence around their yard. We are wondering if the owl could have grabbed it and dropped it.

My DH and DS did go out to the chicken pens around midnight, last night, because the chickens were making such a fuss, but they didn't see anything. We are keeping an eye out.

Welcome Bob's Henhouse!!!

We have those out here. They get quite big and the noise they make resembles what I think a chicken would make while being killed. We used to have a dog years ago that would lick them. We swore the dog was getting high off them and I guess its been confirmed he probably was. The radpoles come thru the irrigation ditches and they turn to frogs everywhere. If you look closely at our gravel drive way, there are dead, dried up frogs everywhere. Glad they don't stink when they die. They get in our porch a lot and they hang out under the porch light eating bugs. Eww.

This morning my wife called me over to look at a bird. It was a turkey vulture circling in the sky. I hadn't seen one of them in years, especially in central Phoenix. City living dictates the prompt removal of dead animals, so I guess there just isn't much for them to eat in town. But sure enough, it was a buzzard. Something must be dead across the freeway.

My wife had the neighbor kid catch the rooster and toss him into the isolation pen. She is convinced he is rude and abusive to the hens. But, she thought that about the rooster we had before, and the rooster before that one. She just doesn't understand the nature of chicken love. Sometimes I wish she would mind her own business. I hate to tell her what her cats do!

The people across the street ate all of their chickens because they are unemployed. They thought they had jobs in a chicken processing plant in North Carolina, but their family called and told them the plant was laying people off. So, they are just staying here.

I gave them a rooster and a hen to get their flock started again, but they got desperate and ate them.

Now I give them the eggs my chickens lay. I can't eat them, and my wife doesn't like them. Her eggs are white and come from the store; my eggs are brown and come out of a chicken's butt. I wonder sometimes what she is thinking.

I have been on this diet since the first week of August. It really sucks. I have lost 22 pounds though. I sure miss bacon and eggs.

Rufus: Thanks for the late night laugh.

I haven't seen any buzzards here.

I had four eggs for dinner.

I'll die happy I suppose...

BUT... I did climb Squaw Peak this evening... 40mins up. 30 mins. down.
I'm sore.. it's why I'm awake.

Hi Rufus, I had a wife like that once. I had a HUGE backyard garden, grew every vegetable there was, picked them and took them in the house. When they rotted I'd take them back out and put them in the compost pile. My daughter and I would usually then just pick them and eat them right there in the garden. My ex didn't think it was food if it didn't come from Safeway. LOL My kids and significant other now eat LOTS of fresh veggies and eggs. If I could just convince them to eat fresh chicken I'd have it made. As it is I have about 15 roosters I need to find homes (or freezer space) for, or come up with something else to do with them.

Too bad the state has put all of the small meat processors out of business. Now if you want to have those roosters processed, you have to deal with an illegal operator. Ask about it at your local carneceria; they will tell you where to go and who to ask for.

We used to use Glendale Meats, but that was years ago. I have no idea where they moved to or if they are still in business.

I have a neighbor that processes goats for special occasions, but that is only for his own use. It takes special equipment to process poultry on a large scale.

You can do it yourself on a one or two at a time basis. Anymore than that, and the women and kids disappear and you will find yourself alone with a bunch of chickens.

As an after thought, some Asians prefer to buy and prepare their poultry in their own manner. They like them alive when they buy them. My son gives most of our roosters to a Chinese friend that keeps them alive behind his store. It is one way of getting rid of the roosters.
