Arizona Chickens

Thanks for the help Mahonri and Beckyhsinglsc. Yes, they'll probably go in the freezer, then on to the stew pot. My cousin said he'd help on Tuesday so that we could both learn. At least he's dressed deer and elk; I have zero experience.

I could separate the BRs one at a time but I only have a plastic dog crate and with the heat we're still having I'm afraid it would be too hot even in total shade. Just not enough air flow. As much as I'm disliking them right now, I wouldn't want them to suffer in the heat.

I've tried to give blood so many times but I'm always rejected!! It's either because I visited my family in Mexico in the past year (just that fact makes me some kind of walking malaria bomb, apparently), or because my mother lives in Mexico (whether I've visited her in the past year or not), or because my body temp was .1 degrees over the threshold, or my iron I was .1 under the threshold, etc etc

Sometimes I feel like trying again just to see what it will be next time ... blah!

Well, I lost my 3rd hen of the summer due to heat. I had the AC working again the first of September but turned it on the other day and it just quit me again. I lost my GiantPartridgeCochinXLightBrownLeghorn. She laid 4 eggs every week. She was a great forager and a huge hen... Laid the cream colored egg in my pic. (bottom left) Made me sick to put her in a plastic bag and put her in the garbage. Wanted to cry.

I saw her earlier in the day.. about 3:30PM in the nest box. Went out to gather her egg that she laid and she was laying along the south wall dead. Laid an egg and died. Now I have to put them in the incubator.. I have her last 7 eggs. She hatched out Jan. 1st of this year.

Mahonri, I'm so sorry to hear that.
Hopefully you'll have good luck with those eggs, and maybe the ones I got. If we get a hen, you are welcome to it.
I lost a rooster and hen about a month ago. He chased her into a raised rabbit hutch that I don't use and keep the door latched, but it must have been open then closed behind them :-( REally made me feel bad to know how they died, so I feel your pain.
Want me to keep my eyes open for an inexpensive evap cooler? It really works well for me.
I've got one or more eating eggs too. I'm hoping for cooler weather so I have a bit more free time to make individual cages/boxes in their coop to find out who's doing what.

I bought my hardware cloth at Home Depot. 25'x48". It was around $55.00 a roll. Lowes has it too but I don't remember the price or sizes.

Good call on the Home Depot/Lowes suggestions. I ended up getting some no-climb to keep out coyotes and will line it with some of that cheap plastic hardware cloth to keep out the sparrows. Ended up being about 1/2 of what I was going to spend on the metal hardware cloth, so my run just doubled in size

Plenty of space for more chicks now - yay! My husband does not share in my excitement over this.

@Mahonri: Sorry about your hen

I still see the sunset avatar. I have never seen the eggs. (chrome)

Mahonri, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your hen.

This heat is taking a toll on all of the chickens it seems. The hens egg production is way down. I got zero eggs on Thursday of last week. I managed to get 5 eggs today, and I have about 15 layers.

I refreshed and now I see the eggs (fun!). I can't believe it stored the old photo in the cache for that long.

PureSnowChic. For now I am still in Phoenix, but as soon as we can sell here we will be moving to Navajo County where we own 40 wonderful acres. (Lots of room for lots of chickens and all the other animals I can collect!) What part of north-eastern AZ will you be in?

Here's some pictures from the last two hatches. The dark colored chicks are from Mahonri's marans. There are two bigger chicks that came from his blue/wheaten Ameruacanas in there too. The 3 older chicks keep more to the back and the younger to the front where the heat lamp is. There's 1 silkie in there too. Its probably going to be a buff color. Two other silkies are separate because they dried up in there eggs and their fur didn't fluff. I need to clean them up to get their crusty feathers to fluff up. I'm still not sure what went wrong.
