Arizona Chickens

We have an abandoned cat too, well kind of. She sleeps in our garage and on our front porch. We use to feed her but the neighbors started feeding her too and they must feed her better food because she turns her nose up at our food now. Funny, when she showed up a couple of years ago, she was skin and bones. Now she's choosy and fat.

She's deaf and meows loud enough to be heard all over the neighborhood. She's friendly, not feral and would rather be inside, but we can't take her in. The garage has to be enough, I guess.
She occasionally goes into our back yard and the chickens ignore her.

NoSkiveez: I've heard that Harbor Freight sells traps cheap but you have to ask for them. They don't have them on the shelf.

ChrystalGail: Did you try www.pets911.com to look for the owner?

Bob: Poor Fluffy. He did his rooster job, though. Did you tell the owner of the dog?

Its not lookin good for this cuckoo marans pullet. I think she's workin really had to pass an egg that's not going to pass. She's 5.5 months old and this will be her first egg. She is sprawled out in the crate, breathing hard, head down, feathers ruffled up and legs straight out. She's dying. I have a heat lamp on her and a himidifier in there. I read tgat will help. I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I don't want to put her down without exploring other options first.

Guess she really is traumatized but for other reasons. I'm very upset about this.

You know he is strikingly handsome. I had one or two from the Am thread who said if I get any more that look like that to let them know.
Perhaps they want to breed a new strain of Golden Duckwings. I hope I don't have anymore pop up. My current roos are all too noisy and I'm wondering if I'm just going to have to give up my Marans breeding program.... we'll see.

Hee hee. I was thinking the same thing, but I don't really have the space for a breeding program.

To make the genetics more complicated, apparently araucanas do come in duckwing, so who knows what crazy genes could be floating around. My husband has decided to build a homemade incubator, so I'll be hatching some of his eggs, and I'll be sure to post pictures of the chicks.

How terrible, so sorry.
I've never had one with this problem but I've read that lubricating with olive oil and warm sitz baths helps.
Good luck and let us know how things go.

My hen is still alive. She looks better this morning than she did last night. I can feel the egg. Its a soft shell. I felt it "give" when I touched it. She's still working really hard to get it out without luck. I've been able to assist her in eliminating her waste. Very disgusting but thankfully I'm not at all squeemish. Hopefully this egg will pass without killing her or causing her to prolapse. She is my favorite hen. I'm just so upset over this. Hubby and I missed church this morning to work on her. She's been in and out of a warm bin of water. It didn't help the egg out but she did go to the bathroom, so that's good.

I hope you don't have to give up anyone. Your Marans are absolutely beautiful birds!!!

You know, with as many as have hatched out I would expect more pics of the little darlings...)

I will get right on that! I just don't want to overwhelm the group with all my chick pics. Sometimes I can get carried away with sharing. I have one that likes to sit on top of my foot when I go in the coop. I'm starting to see some starting to look roo-ish.

Its been 18 hours since be brought the hen to the porch. She drank from the water on her own. The egg is RIGHT THERE but she just can't pass it. From what I've read, everyone else has already passed the egg at this point. It seems like she rests then goes a round of trying to get the egg out. My poor hen.

Well, I tossed the broody out of the box and she never went back in. Guess she wasn't serious. When she decides she is, I will pm you!! I can't believe I would even consider more chickens, but what a shame to waste a good broody hen!

We spent the weekend doing some long overdue yard work. We got the meaties out of the garden and into a chicken tractor. We pruned 5 trees around the coop area and the 3 bushes, one of which had not been trimmed in the 7 years we have lived here. It looks so bare over there now. We also restacked the bricks that the dog knocked over. That was fun cause there were a ton of roaches and crickets under them as well as 2 scorpions and a few spiders including a black widow. The chickens were over there like it was a buffet! Too funny! The one that got the big scorpion ran around like she hit the jackpot!
We took a whole tree worth of branches off the tree that is providing way too much shade over the garden. Probably about 1000 pounds of limbs! We are beat!! But there's nothing like a good hard day's work. It's good for the soul.
