My BO rooster really ticked me off today. He tore a 2 inch hole in the neck of one of my 18 week old Cookoo Marans. I was feeding and I noticed she was beat up, one wing sagging and just sitting in the hutch instead of begging for treats with the others. I picked her up and looked her over thinking her wing was hurt and then noticed blood on my arm from her neck. So I washed it out with water from the hose. Put her in my isolation ark alone with fresh water, food and pine shavings. I bought some Blu-Kote from the feed store on my way to work. I'm also going to pick up some hydrogen Peroxide on my way home to clean the wound. Bruce (my BO Rooster) has been trying to mount the hens by just grabing them by the neck and then pushing them down by standing on them while the hen screams. No courting, no romance. My son calls it hen rape. I have 1 rooster and 10 hens. Is this kind of treatment normal with such a young rooster? If this keeps up he goes in isolation after she heals.

Tell your son it's not hen rape, it's chicken nature. or as Rufus would put it "Chicken Love"

I went out this morning to treat my injured hen with the Peroxide and Blu-Cote. In all the post I've read I never once read a post or read it on the label saying "Don't get the Blue-Cote on your hands because it won't come off".

So care to guess what my hands are going to look like at work today. At least I work on jet engines instead of a job like a Dentist or an OBGYN who put his hands in people's mouth or other places.

You can try soaking your hands in bleach water, and it may help a little. Blu-kote contains a lot of gentian violet, which is well known for its permanent colouring attributes.

Do any of you remember back in July when we were asked to fill out a chicken questionnaire? Well I filled one out and I received a free copy of the book the other day. Now, I just need to find time to read it.

I lost one of my older hens, Lucy, yesterday. She was starting to grow her feathers back, but still had bare patches. I had set up a heat lamp near the perches, to keep her warm at night. However, she may have jumped off and couldn't get back up because all of her wing feathers hadn't grown back, yet. I found her yesterday afternoon outside the heated area. She was my first RIR banty chicken.

Well if you just want layers, get some from a feed store (OK feeds in Tucson has some good birds) or try CRAIGSLIST! For SQ birds, find a good breeder. What breeds were you looking for?

Which breeds or classes were you particularly upset about? I know the pigeon folks were not happy, but I am not enough of a pigeon person to have any idea on the details other than what I do or do not care for (don't like the tiny beaks of owls at all; love the breeds with huge muffs; the pouters are a riot).

I know that the same people usually win at these shows because they are serious breeders. I know that my DS will probably not win any big prizes because even though he does hatch his own eggs from show quality chickens, he does not hatch in the volume that these breeders do. He shows his chickens for 4H and as a hobby, and he does like to see what the judges think of his birds.

Well the winning Wyandotte was bad, the winning Leghorn was

and the winning silkie had a HORRIBLE comb and head.
