Arizona Chickens

so is everyone saying that a rooster, young or "experienced" is supposed to be nice to his ladies? my roo is young at 19 weeks and he sleeps in the garage at night so he won't crow at 3:30am due to the light in the coop. so i let him out at 7am with the girls and as soon as he sees them, he starts getting all randy and jumps on as many as he can and they are all yelling and sqwaking and chasing after him if they can. but it's like this all day. he stands on their backs, i kick him off, he mates with them, or tries to, but their is no politeness. the brahmas he tricks, pretends he has found food and the stupid ones come running over and then he gets them lke it's a dark alley. but so far he hasn't ripped holes in anyone. so is this typical young roo behavior?

Pastrymama, umm, yup. pretty much. They'll pick up food and drop it, making a low almost grunting sound to attract the hens, Some of mine have drawn blood on the necks of the hens, but I haven't seen any for quite some time, mostly n the naked necks since they don't have any neck feathers for the roos to grab hold of.

So far she is the only one he has drew blood on. I have seen the same behaviour on one of my White Leghorns but she screamed so loud he let go of her. My injured hen is recovering in my isolation Ark. I would like to have fertile eggs so I am hoping he figures it out but if he continues hurting the hens I will have to do something. I do have a backup plan. I have eggs from NoSkiveez in my incubator and I am hoping for at least one SLW rooster. If so Bruce my have to go. Either that or I have heard that having a second Rooster will lesson the strain on the hens because the Rooster's time is split between the hens and trying to maintain dominance over the other Rooster. Also once the injured hen has recovered I can put the Roo in isolation for a while to give the hens a break.

This is the first time I have heard someone HOPE for a rooster. By chance, if you don't get one I have some youngsters and I'm sure I have a roo or two. I'm sure I could spare one. The mite issue should be resolved by the time you know what genders you have.

I appreciate that. I'll keep you updated. Tomorrow is lockdown for the eggs you gave me. Getting excided.

But I'm confused; BB silkie was a blue hen; RB was a splash pullet. For juniors, Scarlet's black hen won BB both of all junior silkies entered, and on Sunday's junior show was champion for Scarlet's age group.

Of the blacks, Scarlet's hen won BV and Janice's hen won RV.

Here is the report for the silkie club:
46 silkies; 7 exhibitors
6 Bearded Whites (5 were not shown). Cock shown by Janice received BV.
5 Bearded Black. Hen by Scarlet won BV. Hen by Baylee won RV.
8 Bearded Buffs. Hens by Janice won BV & RV.
1 Non-Bearded Buff. Hen by Suze won BV.
3 Bearded Partridge. Hen by Suze won BV; Pullet by Suze won RV.
6 Bearded Blue. Hen by Janice won BV & BB. Pullet by Janice won RV.
6 Bearded Splash. Hen by Brandee won BV & RB. Cockerel by Suze won RV.
7 AOVs (counting the sizzles and splash mix):
1 Khaki. Pullet by Suze won BV.
1 Lavender. Pullet by Janice (no award noted; I need to call and ask about the coop tag markings).
2 Blue Partridge. Hens by Suze won BV & RV and Best and Reserve AOV.
---
1 Black Sizzle: BV & BB*
1 Buff Sizzle: BV RB
1 Splash Mix: BV

*(sizzle breeders intend them to be a separate breed, not a variety of silkie; but who knows; many of the folks that have them are not serious about develping them; a few are)

Robert has a reputation of doing a great job with youth; he is following in Leon's footsteps there.

I'm excited for you. Can't wait to hear how many hatch.

I'm Locking down in a few days too. Eggs from Mahonri. I really hope they all hatch. I'm especially hopeful of the BWA. I've had the hardest time getting them to hatch. I wish I had this incubator awhile ago. I've decided to unplug the incubator I made and call it quits. I made adjustments to it and put 64 eggs in it. I locked down with 39 (6 infertile/no development) and hatched 9. One, possibly two will be culled tonight. It just not worth it to try with it anymore at the cost of what its doing.

I did hatch out a neat looking chick. A silkie. I have to check the eggs to see if it hatched from one of my Silkies or one of Chrystals eggs.

That brings up a question I have about culling chicks. I understand that some may hatch but have serious problems. What might I expect as far as defects. What drives the need to cull. What do you wait on to see if they pull through. And the hundred dollar question....... how do you do the deed humanely? Thanks.
