Arizona Chickens

I'm guessing those swollen eyed chickens have infectious bronchitis.

They need antibiotics and TLC.

Gallo, I didn't mean to offend. I pray you can forgive me. I'd had a bad day... that and I am just sick of left wing liberals blaming every bad thing that happens on conservatives. It never ends. I just thought that it was interesting that MSNBC would actually print the tweet of the young lady that would slant the insane fellow as a liberal... like I said, "Heresay". He was just a nut case and should probably have been in an institution.

Hello Everyone,

I am pretty much a newby to all of this and my opions may be naive. But gonna give you my advise anyway (take it with a grain of salt).

Beckyhsinglsc: Could your bird have nutritional issues? Personally, I don't think the feed they sell has everything chickens need to be healthy. Coordination and strenth problems could be a sigh of rickets. A couple drops of poly-vi-sol for a few days on the back of your hens tongue should clear it up. Also add electrolytes to her water and offer some high protien snacks (scrambled eggs or canned tuna/salmon). Easy treatment to try and you know it won't hurt her.

I think Electrolyes and poly-vi-sol (no iron) are miracle cures!!

Crazyerthanaverage: I picked up 3 hens little over a month ago and they showed similar symptoms to yours. Breathy noises, rales, wheez, lethargic. I also did the research like you did.....scary stuff. But, I finally narrowed it down to Infectious Bronchitis (I hope). I also brought the birds inside, one by one as they showed symptoms. The only abx I had on hand was a sulfer drug. So, I gave it to all 3 of them for 7 days, Poly-vi-sol, Electrolytes, and swiped their mouths out with listerine and cotton swabs daily. IB is a virus so the abx wouldn't help them get over it faster. But, it is my understanding that IB lowers their resistance and they are sitting ducks for any other germ that comes along. One of my birds developed an eye problem like yours. I attributed it to a sinus infection and the lowered resistance. It cleared up in less than 48 hours with the abx and I did some saline rinses. If your birds are laying eggs, wrinkly wierd eggs are a sign of IB. My hens quit laying so I could'nt verify it that way. Probably the only sure way to tell what resp sickness they have is through a blood test. I didn't do that, but if they have a reoccurance I probably will. The good thing about IB, is that the birds can only infect others for a max of 49 days.....not carriers for life. Anyway do some research on IB and maybe you will get lucky.

The shooting shocked me. It left me feeling empty, like a lost a family member. I too am praying for a recovery.

I hope everyone gets a chance to go out and enjoy some sunshine today.

Tanichca - I am so sorry!

TT! & Mahonri - Thanks for your thoughts. I found an open feed store in Marana that has an all-in-one spray that sounds promising (swollen eyes, sinitus, resp. infections, etc...) and am heading off to go get it. Might have to toss a few rocks at the 3 Harris hawk sitting on our antenna eyeing the coop on my way out. They will probably be sitting on the fence 10 feet from the run, scarring my ladies to death, by the time I get back. Fortunately, they cann't get in.

Oh man, I'm a bad mom. I just created the worst concoction ever.

Chocolate Icecream with Salmon Oil.

I figured it would be a good way to sneak some Omega into him.

The smell is making me gag.

He loves it.

Next time I'll use lemon sorbet... at least the flavors would... uhm... ugh.

Try Barleans Omega Swirl. I get it at Sprouts and the kids beg for it. I take it too. Tastes great. Lemon, Pina Colada,...

It is interesting! MSNBC posted that he might be a lib, and Fox News said he might be a righty! Everything is backwards, and maybe that is a good thing. I think both sides need to be more thoughtful.

Oooh, I'll try that. Right now we have Nordic Naturals Strawberry softgels, but they are a bit pricey. I was trying to be cheap... I was curious to see if we could just get away with TJ's salmon oil.

Too smelly.

Sometimes I add some to the chicken food.

Tanichca--I'm so sorry! What happened?

Crazyer--Poor chickens! That looks awful. I'm so glad the pros here were able to offer such great advice. Now if that happens to some of my chickens, I'll know what to look for.

Becky--Congrats on the scholarship! What a blessing! Sorry about your hen, though.

Yay! I hope it helps. Sometimes I think the hawks have a sick sense of humor.

Have you tried plastic owls? I've heard they work to keep hawks away. I thinking about getting one.
