Arizona Chickens

BTW... the fellow pictured in front of the frozen fountain on Channel 12 news is my neighbor from up the street and around the corner.

I lost all 4 of them

They were only a few days old, and they got too cold, or else a draft got to them. Poor little babies.

29 here now and supposed to get down to 23 by 5 am and still be 23 degrees at 8 + the wind! I hope my girls (and everyone else's chickens too) are okay tonight in their open coops. I have sleeping bags, wood, etc blocking part of the wind, but couldn't get it all blocked.

My so sorry. I've had crummy luck with them outside in the brooder. I've had to keep them indoors for two weeks and two-four weeks on the porch depending on the space available. I lost one of two roos and the second isn't looking great.

AZKat, I'm sorry to hear about your orps.

re: frozen gardens. Pretty much sucks. Too windy for covers, blows the heat from Christmas lights right away. Just have to see how many plants and trees survive after all the cold has passed. Good luck to all the gardeners, (myself included).

NoSkiveez, sorry about your goat, but Happy Anniversary! If you are going to be up this way with room for roos, let me know. You can take them to your church, doesn't look like I'm going to get them processed, but do want them gone. After the cold snap I'll round the ones that need to go and get a head count.

that all the chickies survive the weather. Good luck to all.

Don't know what woke me up.... but it's 26 degrees outside right now. I should have closed the windows in the coop. guess I can get up and do it. Most of them are up on the highest diagonal roost and they are all huddled together... that and in the corner on the parallel roost.

I checked the brooder light... it's still on and the box is covered with sheets and towels.. plus they are almost five weeks old so they can cuddle.

ETA: at 4AM it's 24 degrees. Garden is history for a few weeks.

Brrrrrr 16 degrees on my back porch at 7:30 this morning.

How did everyones chickens do last night?? Mine are cold and cranky but OK. I am making them scrambled eggs and hot oatmeal for breakfast. that will cheer them up. Good thing I saved some of my own eggs for hatching, cuz I am pretty sure the ones in the mail are gonna be frozen solid.

I hope everyone finds their critters alive and well this morning!!

I woke up to 13*, with a wind chill of -4. That is colder than predicted. I am just shocked by how cold it is! My 9yo went out to take care of the chickens and brought the 4 younger ones to the back yard. I found them huddled at the corner of the sliding glass door, shivering. Poor things!

I left the faucet dripping, the cabinet open, and ran the dishwasher at 11:15 last night, but our pipes froze anyway. Our high is only supposed to be 33*, so I am wondering if they will even thaw. Grrrrr!

I am also very concerned about the folks down in Mexico in the neighborhood where we serve. A lot of them have no heat and some have no electricity at all. Last year a little girl died from the cold, and it wasn't this cold. Please say a prayer for them!
