do you know when there doing the shows
in phoenix, safford is too far
i gone to the sheep shows but had not had a chance
to go to the poultry shows

The only shows that I know of in the Phoenix area are the Maricopa County Fair, which I think is in April and the AZ State Fair which is in October.

do they do the show for the maricopa county fair
at the same place they do the state fair shows

which hatchery are you going to use for turkeys
local hatched poults have a better survival rate
then shipped birds, breeder stock is better than hatchery
turkeys, protein is higher in turkeys'
remember to feed a 28 percent protein
turkey starter for the first 8 weeks then switch them to
a 24 percent turkey grower, like kelleys brand
or ace hi feed brands, if their to eat they go with the
broad breasted bronze or broad breasted white turkeys
but for heritage turkeys its better from private breeders
than hatcheries, we will be having
royal palms, blue slate, oregon brown turkeys
auburn turkeys, standard bronze turkeys
with this new year i am going to get blue palms
sweetgrass, penciled palms
if anyone wants to get pencilled palms
or pure chocolates, please let me know
i want to order some from a private
breeder in indiana

I agree buying local is a much better idea. Where are you, we would like to come see your set up. How much do you sell your turkey chicks for and when will the blue slate be ready? thanks for the info

were in mesa arizona
different colors breed in different months
i think the blue slates will start breeding during march
or late february so it would be during april or end of march
but if they start laying eggs sooner, it would be in march
sent me a post message or click email

Looks like it is! I'm looking forward to going this year. Dates are from April 13th to April 17th.

From http://www.maricopacountyfair.org : "The Maricopa County Fair is held on the Arizona State Fairgrounds. Conveniently located at 1826 West McDowell Road, Phoenix."

Anyone have experience with The Stock Shop's sexing accuracy? I bought three chicks a couple of weeks ago and sales person was wrong on one of the breeds - he said it was a Wyandotte but turned out to be a darker Ameraucana. The other two are a Production Red and a chipmunk striped Ameraucana.

Thanks,

Fred

i bought some hatching eggs locally
and thought i could have more red star chickens
but ended up wasting my money from 48 eggs
only 38 were clean enough for hatching
and then only twelve hatch from the 38 eggs
first the person that sold me said they would
have them by a certain day then all of a sudden that the eggs
were ready i think they problably gave more than
half that were problably refrigerated but they said
they did not refrigerate them, they problably feed them
layena that could have been a reason or they were refrigerated
or could it be the rooster is too old that the fertility was too low
like every breeder our goal is to improve our flock
the 12 chicks are doing good hope i have better luck next time
with hatching eggs

Hi Fred, welcome to the group. Most stock/feed shops buy from Hatcheries. There are professional "Sexers" that sex the chicks at the hatchery. They have about 90-95% accuracy. You probably ended up with the wrong breed because the sales person didn't know what the chicks of each breed look like. Last time I was at the feed store and looked inn at the chicks, the guy didn't know what they were. I knew because I had that breed before. If they buy them "Straightrun " they are unsexed and there will be roosters.

Most of the chicks I've purchased from the Stock Shop have been correctly sexed - once I did receive 2 boys in a small order. I purchased Gold Laced Wyandottes there once, but the 'wyandottes' ended up being Black Stars.
