Arizona Chickens

Why are you getting rid of all of your crested chickens? I really, really want to expand and get some more chickens, but my dh says no way. I am still trying to figure out how I can at least get a polish hen in there without upsetting him. There are about 5 other breeds we really want, too. I just wonder why you more experienced folks choose some breeds over others.

When I first got chickens I was really intrigued by the crested breeds but aside from the 'do', there isn't much else that interests in with them. Id really love to have chickens that I could let out to free range and I cant do this with them. We had the Spitzhauben pen get left open and the cats were stalking them yesterday morning. The dog was even trying to get involved but she was torn between chaing the chickens and getting yelled at. I'm glad she listens well. If it was up to me, I probably wouldn't keep the polish either. They are my daughters favorite. She wanted to get rid of them up until Buck died.

Who put the bow on the polish? You know they really don't appreciate that. I put pony tails on my polish because they were having trouble finding their food and they were not happy about it. Thankfully I didn't do pony tails like my mom did to us as kids. Hers were so tight we couldn't blink. Lol.

Too cute!!

@ TT --- not only did the cold weather ruin the cactus, plants are half the size they were as they wilted, the aloes look goopy, and my citrus leaves are all curled. The goldfish in the 300g Rubbermaid pond survived under 3/4" of ice though.

Regarding Chicken Math....

Since if & when I do get to do the "Chicken project" as I'm calling it, I'm not going to start from scratch, I'm done with eggs, incubating them , turning them and brooding lil chicks. Had enough fun with Button Quail. I'd be looking for POL hens. I don't need issues hatching eggs and ending up with more roos than I can pawn off and I'd be very happy to just get the "egg factory" going.

The reason for saying 4 and no more than that, is really due to the space that I really don't have. As much as I'd love a nice full hen house, I'm realistic about the space they will need to live in. My yard right now is all gravelled (and I do plan on working on the area where the coop/run would set) and if I can convince the HOA to allow me to keep chickens, I cannot let them run free.

So space & potential noise factor is right now making me say 4 and no more than that. I figure I'll be lucky if I can even get that many.

Wrote to someone who's coop is featured in this forum, but not here in Az and they were surprised at just how noisy their hens were and wondered if I should look into Silkies or a small calm breed. Not suer about eating Silkie eggs but for sure am interested in small calm breeds.

i think my quietest laying pullet is my black astralorp. i absolutely LOVE her. i had more, but, you know, the beagle got two....the loudest is my smallest pullet, a speckled sussex. that bird could wake the dead! but oh so pretty. i had another of her too, but the stroke took her twin...

i find they are only loud when they need to lay and when they are done. oh, and when the alarm sounds. the roo starts it and then all 14 of then get going.

that's loud.

but not as loud as bob's nuthouse!

I have to agree with Pastrymama, my Australorps are very quiet girls. I live on the northwest side of town and have limited space as well. Even though it is legal to have hens in my area, I only ever wanted or planned on 2 chickens, both for space reasons and so as not to upset the neighbors. For some reason, however, I just spent the entire weekend quadrupling the size of the chicken run....?
