Do any of you avid gardeners do your own compost? My mom does (you already know the woes with the seedlings) but I want to have my own bin because, frankly, I'm tired of transporting it. It's not very awesome even though it's only 6 miles.

I'm thinking about building a wooden one on the ground with pallets. I like the idea of worms being able to get in and help the process along. I have a corner on the SW of my lot that only gets about half exposure even when the sun is at super summer straight up height.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I recently (yesterday) discovered that if you put it in a big plastic garbage can, soak it once a week, and then don't mix things up you will create a stinky biohazard that can be smelled for blocks.

I recommend the wood palates. And mixing with a pitchfork.

Lots of mixing.

I think that's where I went wrong.

No you did not tell me that but I did not ask either. PQ is fine with me. One is not a silky. It is a single comb with hard feathers and is about twice the size of the rest. It's feathers are a slate gray color and he has a thin line of feathering going down his legs and he has 4 toes. Do you have a clue what it could be? I am enjoying them very much. Could one of your silkie ladies had an affair with something other than a silkie roo? They are doing well. Will post photos of them soon, maybe you can help me figure out what the other chick could possibly be.

I am not happy with my silkies...that being said, it sounds like I still have bantam cochin mixed in somehow, I THOUGHT that I had gotten rid of all of the birds that could have had cochin in them looks like I missed one. Everyone is housed separate, not even common walls....so no other roos could have gotten in so to speak

I use pine shavings in the whole coop/yard. It's all covered. You can see it on my BYC page. (click the link to the left)
It's very little work. You can search for "deep-litter method" if you are interested.

Well if it makes you feel better we are absolutely smitten with 2 of them, cutie-pies. I basically got them to get me back into a chicken state of mind for when my shipment comes. It worked. I am devoted to them all and have gotten back into the poultry scene. We are enjoying them very much.
