Arizona Chickens

I don't use anything... the coop floor is linoleum and the run is just dirt. I would have to build a barrier around the run to keep sand/shavings in and I just haven't had it in me yet to do that. The rocks have all been cleared out so there's no unnecessary wear and tear on their feet.

my dh built a pallet one like you described, but the only thing living in it that i have found are MICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no worms. NO WORMS!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST FRICKIN' MICE!!!!!!!! where do these things come from????????????? i can't stand them, but the chickens love them but i was told that's how chickens get salmonella. MICE! oh, and i happen to have one of those lovely plastic bins too. yes, it stinks and i can't stand to open the darn thing. must get rid of it right away.

THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate all the wonderful welcomes and info...my kick plate is now on in the house and I will be filling with sand and then fir shavings tomorrow or when we dry out...I am not keen on the deep method because I am using the poo in my compost bin so I'm pretty excited to see how this all goes. My girls were having a hay day scratching in the run during the rain...I thought for sure they would all be snuggied down and weather the storm...they may have gotten some of my crazy ways since I love the rain too!

Have any of you used rice hulls for coop bottom? It sounds interesting so i'm curious...

Wow, we are growing faster than Starbucks! Soon we will take over the world! The WORLD!!!! Hmmm, this has possibilities...

Welcome Newbies! I was one a newbie but apparently Chicken Fever is contagious.

Mahonri - I lost a BWA chick the other day. There are 9 remaining and I'm willing to be they are all roos.

Tofu - With my white Silkies I periodically got a straight comb and 4 toes. I don't have them anymore. I've only got some project color Silkies.

I set 30 polish eggs, 25 marans eggs and a hand full of Phoenix eggs. I'm working to replace my breeders for next year.

That dog ended up going to animal control today. It was so sad when they took her. Had there been no aggressive behavior thing could have been different.

Cluckin, here are my compost bins. I have two made from old city garbage cans- made by some high school kids in a business program and they sell them through the Tucson Organic Gardeners ($40). I also have one store-bought one. I love the garbage cans ones best. I use a thing called a compost crank to turn it and it makes it really easy. When my bins are full I use home made bins made from 1/2" hardware cloth, 2' high wired into a 3' diameter cylinder and lined with heavy black plastic. It works pretty good. My original gut reaction was to place them in as much sun exposure as possible to help heat them, but I now think it's much better to have them in the shade to preserve water content.
