Arizona Chickens

Hi and welcome

! You have asked a very dangerous question and entered a very dangerous group. Soon you will want 10 of every breed, and everyone here will convince you NEED 10 of every breed. We are a chicken-crazy bunch!

mclevinson is correct on both counts. There are some feed stores that will even place an order for specific breeds for you. Nurseshelly has mentioned that the Ace Hardware in Queen Creek does this. There are a lot of people hatching on this thread and some that may have older pullets available, too.
ETA : Forgot to mention that there are many breeders on this thread with beautiful birds, too. If they have what you are looking for, that would be a great way to start.

What part of AZ are you in, and what are you wanting from your chickens? Great egg layers? Beautiful yard ornaments? Lap-chickens? Dinner? All of the above (it is possible)?

Yes, Welcome Welcome Welcome Derrick!!!

I'd add... no roosters if you're going to be keeping chickens in stealth mode, and avoid breeds with the word "flighty" in their description

Here is a link to the Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart, which I found helpful and (so far) accurate. http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

My
first poultry project was Bantam Brahmas, which lived up to their mellow reputation, and I would probably still have them if they laid large eggs!

I ignored the "flighty" description in the leghorns we got and now they are my favorite. Very personable and laid back. We have two Ideal 236 leghorns. They do like high places, though...chairs, wheel barrows, anywhere they can get a little height.
I also really like our Black Sex Link (BSL). My RIRs (production reds)are too bossy but lay a lot of eggs. I'm in it for the eggs and company. They are great company.

i was thinking of some meal worms but they look creepy

have you seen the ones they have a petco.com
which mealworm size would you recomend
for starting with mealworms

I bought medium at the actual petco store. They are actually cheaper at the store than online.

Mclevinson - I don't know what the white stuff on your grapes is. But, the nurseries and some hardware stores sell a sulfer powder that is used for mildew and fungus stuff on plants.

Thank you Turkey Breeder, I am going to check out those stores. Have to make a Phx run on Friday anyway.

Dang you people dont mess around.....

Well first off I am in north phoenix, and yeah if anyone on here has some chicks that they are looking to sell I would much rather get some from someone who knows what they are doing vs. some craigslist ad or feedshop....as for what my goals are....looking for decent egg layers but also friendly, there will be kids that come into contact everyonce and a while so I dont want to have to worry.

Lastly I will deff. want to stick with hens only....no roosters.....needs to be as quiet as possible.

thanks for your help and info.

Evening, folks!

I feel like all I have done lately is whine. Sorry. So, here are a few pictures of the fruits of my labors.

...there is no pun intended here. I am showing off the bathroom remodel, not Sir BarfsAlot.

For those of you who have been to my house, this bathroom WAS the "Green Frog Bathroom"--the bathroom you had to walk through the unfinished dog room to get to. The bathroom was so small, you could not close the door because the door would hit your knees.

We installed the shower fixtures last night. There are three fixtures, with 6 settings. There is a rain pan, a regular showerhead, and a handle-spray for grandma. You can have any two (or just one) spraying at any one time. Last night, everyone took a shower in the new bathroom, even though I didnt have a curtain for it yet.

inside the shower.

We are still putting in the fixtures and I need to decorate. Today the DH put in the big mirror, the sink basin, and grandma's makeup table.

More pictures to come, eventually.

ETA: with the exception of the kids, we all took showers seperately in the new bathroom. Otherwise that would have been weird.

You NEED to get mealworms...mealworms are calling you....mealworms...your menagerie won't be complete without mealworms...get mealworms...Just trying my e-hypnosis. Seriously, I am astonished at how quickly they grow, and it is easy. Plus you could consider them an educational item: follow an insect that has complete metamorphosis through its entire life cycle.
Sorry I missed your post to DC earlier. Good information, and if you keep pushing those seramas and posting adorable pictures and videos I am going to have to move to a rural area!!!!
