I'm thinking about getting some too. Did you get the "Giant" sized ones?

arizonadreamer Whew, no kidding! Now I am worried that I am going to have to buy food for the mealworms! Mine are looking great. I ordered the large size, and they seem to be active and healthy. I am over the heebie jeebies, now I am fascinated by them!

mclevinson DON'T buy the giant ones! They have been treated with an insect hormone to keep them from developing into adults (which are beetles) and to just grow to be big grubs. They will not produce offspring. Gallo and I ordered the large size so that they would begin to make new mealworms more quickly. I don't think it matters though, as long as you don't get the "super-sized" mealworms. They are easy to care for and the ladies LOVE them.

Hmmm, it's been a few years since we had a lizard, but we used to get him superworms, and occasionally one would hide from him well enough that it escaped being eaten as a "worm." However, Snyder REALLY loved those beetles they developed into.

Today the bantams arrive at the feed store. I will be there when the doors open.

Thanks. He was sick again last night, with the same results as the previous incident. Poor baby was so restless, he thrashed around, and I think he gave me a fat lip.

I yelped when he head-bonked me, and the DH yelled back, "will you STOP YELLING?!"

This coming from a man who's snore sends me to the couch more often than not.

Good morning Arizona!

Mandymooligan, Congratulations!

Sonoran Silkies, there are two kinds of "superworms" on the market. One superworm is Zophobas morio. They grow up to be about 2" long before pupating. This species is relatively much more labor-intensive to raise than standard mealworms, Tenebrio molitor. Cannibalism on Z. morio pupae is quite high by beetles so you have separate them. They are also relatively slow growing. So, the pet industry figured out that you could treat T. molitor with juvenile hormones and have a worm that grew to similar proportions as Z. morio without the difficulties. The JH probably isn't really a problem to anything eating the worm--unless you're feeding them to arthropods. The problem stems from the fact that you never quite know what you're getting at the pet store. Z. morio take so long to develop, you can waste a lot of time raising the worms of which most never mature and reproduce because you were sold treated T. molitor. I raised all three kinds mentioned here. It took me three purchases from different locations before I was able to obtain Z. morio. Then I realized they weren't really worth it for what I needed. I suspect you can easily grow as much biomass of untreated T. molitor as you could Z. morio in the same amount of time. I've never been tempted to obtain JH to treat my own worms.

Bob's Henhouse, you're right about mclevinson's grapes--the dreaded powdery mildew! Excess moisture is the problem. I have to admit though, I have had no experience with it here in Tucson so I don't know anything about treatment--other than fixing the moisture problem.

CrazyerThanAverage, I've been wondering what's happening! I'm glad the eggs came o.k. and made it under Vader. Now it's wait time. I thought I'd be all wired and nervous. I think I'm feeling the broodiness.

LareePQG, your bathroom gave me a serious pang of guilt for my procrastination. I've been avoiding ours because I don't know how to lay tile. I know it's something I could do, but it's a lot of learning and then dealing with my mistakes. It's also one of those things that I couldn't imagine paying someone else to do. I'm so jealous.

Learn to lay tile in your laundry room or something for the first few times. Pay someone to lay the tile in the bathroom.

We helped a friend tile his house first before I did my own bathrooms

. Good way to practice.
Very cool looking laree!!! One way to encourage showering... Why don't you park your little knight in the bathroom at night? Would make cleanup easier!

Do any of you have to sneak chickens in? As in hope the significant other does not notice?

Strange thing is my hubby does not seem to be the least concerned which totally surprises me, he usually is an ass when it comes to me dragging home strays. Maybe it is because chicks are cheep.
