I never got a response from anyone here about vaccination. I've decided that I'm going to vaccinate against Marek's, I just need to find a local source tomorrow or see if it can be ordered online. I understand that it only comes in very large quantities so I would be quite willing to share it with anyone in the Tucson area that needs it. I just have to have it by this coming Sat.

mclevinson, do I understand you have your first eggs? Congratulations!

azpenguin, nice assistant! You must be in Tucson too; we love Harlow Gardens. I have to stay away from that place, I'd be broke after a few visits. I've never seen a scorpion in town here!

Desertrat011, I guess those Phoenix GHOs aren't all that unseen!

Wow, you have a lot of interesting posts suddenly! The owl thing is really spooky. I didn't know they would eat things as large as cats! I saw a big one a while back... now that I think about it, I haven't seen the feral cats lately. Hrmm...

When are your chicks hatching? I should have some in 4 weeks.... probably too late to share the vaccine with you. I have never used it, but it seems like a good idea. Is Merek's the same thing that medicated feed protects against?

I'm also insanely jealous of your lavender! I hear that you can dry the flowering stem, and then put it in your dresser drawers and hung the linen closet. It is supposed to make everything smell wonderful and clean! Isn't it supposed to keep insects away, too?

I think I've heard of lavender lemonade, and lavender tea.

Hi TT! I've been cutting back the lavender and burning it in the chiminea. Along with the rapidly invading thyme, summer savory and mexican oregano. I guess I should have used the google for lavender uses. I hope you can mix up as much Marek's vaccine as you need, if so, I'll have it on hand when your chicks hatch. Didn't you get some BBS Orpingtons from Bargain? Aren't they under the hen yet? I'm sooo envious. My chicks hatch in 6 days. The medicated chick feed is for coccidiosis.

Possibly, someone emailed me about them and I wrote back. Craigslist people are super flaky, so who knows!

Gallo - How much are you spending? If it isn't a small fortune, and you can mix up a batch later, I'd be happy to pay half. The Eggies should be here later this week!

I've just found some on jefferslivestock.com (http://www.jefferslivestock.com/product.asp?camid=LIV&pn=F7-J7) but the shipping is more than the vaccine.

I hope we can find some place in town that carries it.

Yes, that is what I discovered earlier, too, which is why it would be great to split the shipping even if we can't split the vaccine. I read that once it is mixed it is only good for an hour, but that could be incorrect. Splitting shipping three ways makes it better. I'll call tomorrow to see if the freeze dried portion can be divided.

Hi Constance, I think you're right, you have to use it right away after mixing. I read some web sites that talked about splitting up the vaccine and it certainly seems do-able if you have access to the right balance (like you do). Barring that, it does seem that we should split the shipping if we can't find it locally. Here's a succinct how-to on vaccinating chicks for Marek's that seemed helpful: http://poultryone.com/articles/mareks.html I'll start calling around first thing in the morning.
