Arizona Chickens

El Guero opened two years before I moved from the old house. Funny thing about that location is nobody had ever been able to make it work, and when Guero opened we figured it'd be another "two months and it's gone" kinda joint. But I still had enough trouble eating reasonably - when all of your friends are Mexican, and everytime you visit their mom or nana wouldn't let you leave without eating, and the food was always OMG incredible homemade... You see where I'm going there. Great. Now I'm getting hungry again

Chickens were common enough that we usually knew which yard to chase a stray hen back into.

Thanks Gallo, I found the same thing at 2 Bar O, Tucson Feeds, and AZ Feeds.

Given Laree and Pastrymama's experience, the increased popularity and proximity of neighborhood chickens, and my huge wild bird population, I think I am going to vaccinate with Marek's, Fowl Pox, and Newcastle/Bronchitis. They have all occurred in AZ. Plus Laree is right, once you are paying for shipping, might as well go all the way.

Let me know if you decide to vaccinate and want to do a combined order.

I am ok with it! I'll see how I do with my new batch of chicks coming next week, and if all goes well, I'll start watching for an incubator! Well, I'll keep watching, there was one on Tucson Craigslist yesterday...

I keep forgetting to tell you I love your fish's name!

Stop, please stop! I had a healthy breakfast, and now I am HUGELY craving Guero Canelo!

Yeah! Me too! Carne Asada burro!

Some cebollitas on the side. Maybe a roasted chile or two. Look how great those guys are doing now. I heard they're opening another place up on 22nd.

The specter of a flock in the grips of Marek's sickens me. I can only imagine how I would feel if it happened and I could have prevented it. Yeah, look how many backyards in the short distance between you and I have chickens already. The worst part is I'm pretty sure we're sharing the same wild bird population. Constance, you've seen my situation, how would I really quarantine them from one another anyway unless they are kept inside? I live on a postage stamp. Will my broody hen be sad if I take her chicks away?

It would be hard to take the babies away, and how nice it would be to be able to watch them get raised

! Perhaps necessary to move them? I don't know, hopefully someone experienced will answer. My set-up is like yours: the ladies have the run of the yard when we are home. My chicks will be inside for the first 2-3 weeks, but they can still be exposed by the dust and dander we bring into the house.

I think we have read too much!

Just wanted to say hi! We're joining the chicken craze. I buy eggs from one of the neighbors, but his supply runs short sometimes, so we're thinking of getting a couple hens to supplement the egg production.

Is craigslist (or here, I suppose) the best place to find older chickens? We don't have the time right at the moment to care for baby chicks the way they should be so were looking for some a bit older than can be outside at the least.
