Arizona Chickens

I did get some ducks and chicks back after Easter last yr....

I have a feeling that this year up here is going to be worse.....people are moving from the area all the time and they don't often think about the fact that they might not be able to take these animals with them, It is really sad

WHAT is the point of having chicks in a classroom if not so that the kids can see and learn? And how will they do THAT if the chick is in a tote? And the teacher didn't bother to learn basic chick care herself?

This morning I stood at the classroom door waiting for the teacher to arrive with my cage all ready for the chick to be put in. Once she arrived we went into the classroom and there wasn't a sound. We went and looked in the shoe box. The teacher put a scarf in the box. The chick wasn't anywhere to be seen and she thought he go out. I told her to unroll the scarf. She lifted up the scarf and sure enough out rolled the poor little chick, dead. She looked at me and shut the lid. Then she said "what happened , I really tried with this one". I am sure my mouth almost hit the floor at that point. I told her he had probably got to cold. Then she handed me the box and askeed me to take it. I was a little upset at that point. I took the box and got rid of it. I really have NO idea what the teacher was thinking. To top it off this was a three year old preschool classroom. My son is very good with chicks but that is only because he has raised the chickens and ducks that we own and taught how to handle them. The teacher didn't take a second to learn up on chick care or anything.

While I am usually anti-tattle, you may want to think about having a talk with the manager/principal of the school if possible. I don't think getting her in trouble will solve anything, but maybe they can institute a "No live animals without prior approval" policy.

Or maybe no live animals without even TRYING to self educate and well, PREPARE for them? Hello? Maybe Google "caring for baby chicks"? A proper cage? food, water. warmth? Arrrrghhh.

"Stuff happens", but it's worst when it all happens at once like that. If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one - in the last week, I've had three rabbits in a row kindle on the wire instead of the nest box.

I have Australorp x Delaware and Australorp x Barred Rock crosses available. They hatched March 16th, so 6 weeks old today. They're healthy and active, and have been outside for a while. If you guys are still planning to check out our place this weekend, you can see them, and also maybe get some ideas for some "good enough" housing. (We'll get a barn someday. Really!)

Exactly, if things hadn't happened all at once the kids may have had time to process it a bit better.

I'm sorry to hear about your rabbits. How many babies did you end up losing?

We do still plan on coming by for a look-see - although, we're out of town Saturday for bday party, but should be back that afternoon. So Sunday will work best. Australorps are great eggs layers, right? We would love to check them out as well as the rabbits AND the "good enough" housing

Thanks

I just checked with Mesa Feed Barn where I purchased my chicks 4 weeks ago and didn't even think to ask if they were vaccinated.

Ok, I find out they're not so now I need to get busy. Is there a good tutorial on vaccinating? I've seen a lot of little bits of info but haven't found enough that I feel comfortable yet. Besides Mareks, what do we need to give them?

Thanks!

Erin

Erin-

There are lots of good threads out there--a quick search will get you there

We've also talked about vaccinations in the AZ thread 3 or 4 times in the last 2 months. I hate to tell you to go back and scan, but I have to leave in a minute and am not going to have time to re-type everything.

Still- FYI--most of the feed stores do NOT vaccinate. The chicks cost more if they do.

anyone not mind helping out to vaccinate
some chicks that have experience vaccinating
i am not asking for free vaccines i can split the
cost of the vaccines but i never have vaccinated
any chicks i cant risk hurting them its not easy
when you dont know to vaccinate

Thanks! I'll go back through to find the discussions.
