Arizona Chickens

Thank you guys for the tips on keeping the chickens cool. These are my first chickens so I'm hoping I do it right. I have a few very sweet Brahma chicks that I hear don't do well with the heat here and I'd hate to lose them. So far so good. Bugging my poor hubby now to install a mister this week before the horrible mid July heat hits us.

So, I was really binned about my Salmon Roo dieing. I took the 3 salmon faverolle pullets and put them in with the BWA the other night. I got up in the morning to discover the hard way one of those pullets is male. The BWA rooster had bee kicking the snot out of him for awhile. The whole back of his head is pretty much gone. He's in isolation right now. No sign of infection. So that's good. I have a rooster! Whoo hoo!

I made my first batch of soap too. A few actually. I did have one goof but I think I figured it out and it wasnt a whole batch. It wasnt the small amount that would not fit in my mold. When Meg comes for a visit, I'm going to puck her brain about milk soaps.

Hmmm. Can't help with the beer. Cheese; I think I can manage cottage cheese and ricotta maybe. Kefir cheese even.

Soap peoples, soap! Constance, TT & Pimachickens (Gallo???) if you are serious we can arrange something. I've maybe 4 people for the Queen Creek class, but we may have to revise the schedule by a week...4th of July weekend in 2 short weeks!

The broody abandoned the nest last night. I was hoping that she'd be on the nest in the morning, but she wasn't, and the eggs were totally cold. I took the eggs inside and candled them, and they were all totally clear. I think that maybe she sensed that they weren't developing and gave up.

Constance, I just helped my neighbor process a turkey. I was surprised at how it all came back to me. Let me know if you have to process those roolie boys and want help (that blue olive egger is sooo cute!

AZKat, I'm sorry about your clutch. I have a broody that I just put eggs under six days ago. She'd been broody for over a month and was getting off the nest three times a day, so I was worried that she wouldn't stay on the fertile eggs I finally put under her (she was sitting on some non-fertile eggs). Yesterday and the day before she only got off the nest once and just for a few minutes. It's interesting how her behavior is changing, she must be able to detect their development.

Brenda Schonig, what kind of tomatoes are you growing?

I do think it would be fun to get together, and soap is probably cheaper and easier than beer, sooo...any thoughts on when and where?

Gallo and Constance - If you do process the roos, can I help (or at least watch)? I would really like to learn how.

As to where and when, Someone in Tucson needs to volunteer a largeish workspace (kitchen/dining area works well) and I think I can do it the 3rd or 4th week in July on a Sunday so DH can keep the kids.
