Mahonri, do ALL your ameraucanas have blue legs? Gonzo(that's what little roo should be called now) has the bluest purplest legs I have ever seen. This chick is 5 weeks now, is not wheaton or blue wheaton, laree says must be splash and somehow manages to eat with that beak! it also thinks it's a duck because it sits in a bowl of water everyday. are you SURE you don't want him? one look at his silly messed up beak and you will be in chickie

we have new neighbors next door. the previous owners had parrots and had these HUGE underground cages built for them, brilliant, it kept them cool and there was a deck on top. so hubby is out talking to the new guys moving in the other day and they ask about what was up in the back yard. hubby says they had parrots they kept down there. and the man looks relieved and said oh good, we thought maybe they had CHICKENS or something!

Oh boy, did your DH tell them you have chickens? Good luck! BTW, the subterranean parrot portals sound awesome.

Sonoran Silkies, I really agree about the reflective insulation. I think it's a big part of what makes my coop even remotely livable for the two-three hours in the afternoon when the sun blasts it. I also have it on a tractor. I recently covered the tractor with galvanized metal roofing and did some tests with and without the insulation and it was clear that without the insulation it would be one large chicken broiler. With the insulation, it's a favorite place to hang out in late afternoons.

I hope everyone's birds make it through the next few days.

We're definitely in for a rough stretch here.

Wow that power outage yesterday was horrible! I had some chicks due and the power went out for 8 hours!!! WE have one that just hatched today and I am super excited! I hope we get at least one more so it will have a buddy, LOL!

Questions. when you hatch in a Brinsea Advanced.upright the chick kinda poped its head out of the topof the shell but it can't seem to pull its self out of the bottom. Its a packed house in there should I help it outof the bottom , or will it eventually work its self out?

Gallo no, he did not tell them what i've got going on over here! they are on the other side of the yard anyway. they shouldn't be able to hear them until the little cochin roo starts crowing. and i'm sure they'll be wondering where it's coming from.

yes, the underground parrot paradise thing or whatever you called it, is super neat. it would be PERFECT for a flock. too bad they are ignorant, i would suggest it.

Arrrrrgh losing my first hen to heat stroke today it appears. Had chickens seems like forever and never had this happen before. She is 3 or a little older and perhaps that is part of the problem along with this brutal heat we are having this year.

Taking all the precautions we all do here in AZ, but...

114 here in the shade right now and tomorrow will be hotter....

Don't worry about it-- I have been swamped with several deadlines and barely doing any online stuff other than that during hot hours, and when it is bearable outside, trying to set the birds up for better survival of the heat.

I think I got at least a couple of your messages, and will look through them tonight or Sunday. Tomorrow is DH's birthday, so am kind of swamped.

Project birds I have available are dun and paint; these would be birds with the genes and some of the right traits, but not all, and most do not have silkie feathering. I do have an extra champagne cockerel who is pure silkie. I also have mottled, but they are WAY, WAY from meeting the standard. Other than that I think I have young greys and partridge available. Probably some blues or splash, too, and a few sizzles.
