Arizona Chickens

Tracy - Welcome to BYC

Mahonri --- I'm sorry to hear of your losses. Hopefully that's the last one. My one and only adult BCM is still doing okay, but out of my 19 hens, she does seem to suffer the greatest when it's hot. Last year, I lost my Light Brahma because of the heat (heavy and feather-footed). I think certain breeds do have a harder time here.

I haven't lost any hens yet this year, but did last year, before I started wetting their run down. I wet down a sandy area under the trees in the late morning and by the hottest part of the afternoon, it is just damp and they burrow down just a little and lay there in the damp sand. It really seems to help.

I can't believe it! They are so cute, and it is a good price. I didn't have much luck with CL either. I gave up. We will be processing many of the roos.

I'm having a harder time selling my chickens on craigslist also. I'm not sure if it's the heat, vacations, or just more people raising and selling chickens now.

I've got a cute little bantam Easter Egger pair listed. They are 9 weeks old and sexed (definitely 1 female and 1 male). If anyone here wants them, the price to BYC members is $15 for the pair. She should lay small blue/green eggs when grown. I have a few standard size 9 week old pullets for sale too (BCM, RIR mix, EE, BPR) that were raised with these 2, in case you want the EE pair, but don't want to raise up just 2 babies alone. If you are interested in the EE bantam pair, and would like prices on extra pullets, PM me (prices range from $8 - $15, depending on breed).

I also have a 15 month old bantam Frizzle hen (either red or black) that could go with those bantams, in case you want to try your hand at getting frizzled EEs! She has not been introduced to them yet, but I could get them living together ahead of time, if needed. I would love to breed them myself, but I can't keep roosters here.

Hey everyone I hope everyone has been having a good summer so far. Sorry to the ones that have lost birds from this crazy heat and no rain! I have been really busy and lots going on so I have missed everyone on BYC.

Our birds are doing good (2 EE, 1 BA, 1 SLW, 1 GLW, and one new chick). Our ducks are also doing great, our chocolate muscovie hatched out 13 ducklings and our two swedish are sitting on nests. The males are all hanging together like a bunch of bachelors until the females are all down sitting and being moms.

Guess what we found today? Elvis sleeps inside in his carrier, and I put the carrier on top of their coop during the day. DH walked by and this is what he saw:

Just drove in from Utah. We had a little rain on the reservation near Grey Mountain, a tiny amount near Flagstaff and then hit the dust storm at about Antham.

No rain here, but it looks like the folks north of us got plastered.

The fellow taking care of the chickens didn't gather any of the eggs since Thursday. I told him he could have them. I gave them to the dog. A couple looked like they had started to develop without a broody!

He told me a big black hen had died, I assumed it was my marans... it was one of my little Icelandic roos. Not as big a loss as I had imagined.

As HOT as it is here.. it's so good to be home in my own bed.

Thanks for the great welcome!
I'm sorry about the losses from the heat. I lost a chick last weekend. I had just put them out and they piled. I don't know what I was thinking, moving them outside in the middle of a 112 degree day. I've added a fan and rice hulls that Islam several times for the chicks.
The Banties and jumbos have soaked rice hulls too, although they've discovered the garden and seem to think the corn is the coolest place to lie. I'm not so happy about that since the jumbos are big enough they're knocking down the corn.
I have a bunch of extra EE Pullets I'd like to sell. They're 4 weeks old and looking great. Cheap! I had to order twenty five chicks and that's way too many.
Plus, have two OEGB Silver Duckwing and the lavender D'Uccle roosters that need homes. Craigslist is not getting any hits.

Woo-hoo rain last night! Missed the high winds and just got a nice steady soaking rain for about an hour. All should be well on our little chicken ranch with some moisture in the air now.
