annekaelber, Welcome to our AZ thread and

You're getting excellent advice here, so I won't elaborate other than to show you another example of a southern AZ chicken coop: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=56638 Good luck with your poultry planning. You'll be so glad when you finally get your birds.

Thank you so much for the welcome and the helpful advice right off the block. I've started a notebook and am taking copious notes! And I will definitely make sure we don't purchase any chicks or chickens until the coop is done!

Arizonachicken, what are "point of lay chickens" and "older pullets"? Off-the-cuff, I'm guessing "point of lay" may mean they are mature enough to be about to start laying eggs? Is your coop up on the coop pages? I would love to see Arizona-based coops in detail, so I know what to keep in mind.

Thanks for the suggestion of a location to shop! I am hoping to eventually find people here I can help with the purchase of some of their chickens -- I like to "keep it local" if I can!

I imagine the search for the breed(s) and the design of the coop will go hand-in-hand. I'm just really eager to start searching and researching.

Anne.

I've got incubating fever so when I start up the 'bator in September watch for the posts!

I do not use A/C in my coop, but the coop is 3-sided, so there's lots of ventilation. If you have an enclosed coop - you probably need the A/C. Besides being open, my coop and run is very shaded and I wet the area outside the small run down every morning, so that it's damp and cool by afternoon. So far this year, I haven't lost any of my 20 hens.

The area I wet down is off to the left of the coop/run, but still inside the larger run that is enclosed by horse panels (as pictured here):

Thanks for sharing your experience with your part blind hen. I do think my (probably deaf) star will be fine once the integration of flocks is complete and I appreciate your reassurances. She sure is skittish though. I haven't been able to catch her to clip her wing like I have most of the others.

Beautiful coop! Thanks for sharing!

I agree- beautiful! And I showed my DH some of the features you have- the next day he added circle doors to our nest boxes- now one hen actually uses them sometimes instead of laying in the dirt under the coop like the rest! And we will be working on a better water system- really like your setup.

She has some pretty little roos.

Thanks so much for those beautiful brahmas... wish I would have PM'd you sooner so I could have purchased the meredith Ameraucanas. They were real pretty.
