Arizona Chickens

TT! and others with more knowledge - just a thought (maybe a bad one), but can you bring the little guy in and give him a steam with some vics or mentholatum to help open things up? I know this is just treating the symptoms, but would it help give him some temporary relief? Perhaps give him an ice pack to stand on while he is inhaling steam?

If this is a rotten idea, someone please post why so I don't try it when I am in this position!

As annoyed as I was, I am grateful for the rain. Hopefully they had a good laugh at my expense and I have now paid my dues for my evil thoughts. Maybe we will now get more rain. The whole scene was kinda funny.

TT! - What kind of antibiotics can you give chickens? I have a bunch of random stuff for furry critters...and would be happy to meet you if they will help. Doxycycline, cephalexin, amoxi, clindamycin?

doxycycline and amoxicillin are available OTC at feed stores. Cephalexin probably requires a prescription; don't know anything about clindamycin. That said, any of them would probably help. I'd suggest taking a table, cutting it in half and putting it down his throat. A capsule, open and mix with something like applesauce that he will eat. Or try mixing it with a little water (maybe a tablespoon?).

I listened to his lungs, they pop when he breathes. :-( There is no where to get antibiotics on Sunday night, is there?

I can get you a new cockerel. Do you keep any VetRX on hand?

Of course you have roos

The awful part is that I have 2 cockerals and probably won't keep both. Even if he is headed for a soup pot, I don't want him to die miserably of IB! Although this one is the one I will most likely keep (Lavender orpington, the other is a blue).

I don't have any VetRX, I really should be more responsible about these things.

Thanks for all the info constance and for offering to help, you too pimachickens.

I brought him in and put him in the bathroom. It is warm and draft free, and humid. I gave him a bowl of Emergen-C and a plate of scrambled eggs and plain yogurt. I'm going to wait and see if he eats. He's still standing (although he seems a little wobbly) and I haven't seen any more mucus come out. I might wait and pick antibiotics up early tomorrow. I don't have any vicks

Mahorni - I can't focus! I'm on 4 hours of sleep and I have a crabby 3 year old who just wiped poop on me (at least he's tried to wipe his own butt, that's a step in the right direction). What kind of antibiotics do I need? What else should I be doing?

You're stealing my material.

I have Dengard, durymycin, sulmet and a little bit of tylan injectible. Denagard is excellent (as good as Baytril), although not approved for poultry in the US. I like keeping Baytril in stock, but don't have any at the moment. Need to mail order it; QC supply is least expensive. I have a few other meds--I never throw anything away unless it expires, so there are some things for eyes, ears, NSAIDs, etc. I also keep ivermectin pour-on and wazine on hand.

What? You mean yours is trying to wipe his own butt, too? Mine went, "Look, I wiped my butt! I have poop on my fingers! Help me wash them off!" *grabs my dress with the poop fingers and starts tugging me towards the sink*

He used an entire roll of toilet paper to wipe. The toilet was filled with huge wads of it.
