Arizona Chickens

Mikey D- I have heard cardboard is not a good idea because it can start on fire easily with the heat lmap. I have used a big rubbermaid tote when I was desperate.

Yep! Ditto!

I have a few on my front porch I'm not sure I want to keep looking at now.

Hello AZ, another newbie here... Just started our chicken adventure a few months ago. I guess I could have waited on this for some cooler weather to start learning...lol oh ya I didn't get that choice our first chicken, her name is "Chicken" original I know, just showed up on our driveway and decided she would stay, a month later I cleaned up the driveway one last time and built her a coop in the backyard, been a learning experience ever since. We started to get eggs from her the very next day so I guess she is a happy girl, been getting 4 - 6 eggs a week now. She is an "Easter Egger" from what I can tell she has a light green colored egg. Last week we added a Red Starr pullet, Ruby, she is about 3 months old. We don't have any real idea how old Chicken is but from what I'm reading she may be older as her eggs are typically all all rough spots on the shell. Chicken has been a bit naughty since we introduced Ruby last week picking on her and not letting her near the food or water, being a bit vocal as well... She is a little better now but I still let her roam free in the back yard during the day and keep Ruby in the run (we used an old dog run we had for their house... It is 6' x 10' and I built them a small 3 sided coop with 2 nest boxes, they seem to like it) during the day. They both have access to food an water this way. Looking forward to learning more here.

THANKS pastrymama, who just dropped off a great looking little splash wheaten ameraucana roo. He's now trying to get used to Joe and Josephina (TJ chicks hatched by Meg) along with a little Icelandic roo and a couple of what I call "Arizona Blue's" and 4 juvie Icelandic pullets.

Welcome D046113!

11:00 AM and it's already 108 out back.
