Arizona Chickens

My pullets will be 20 weeks tomorrow. Is it too soon to start the count down to eggs?

I actually prefer the moon glo heat lamps that yhou find in the reptile section of pet stores. Heat, a tiny bit of light, truly looks like moonlight. Just make sure they also get daylight, or switch to a regular bulb during the daytime.

This sounds similar to what we just used to brood quail. They did very well with it!!

Ours is Flukers clamp lamp for reptiles. With dimmer switch, 75 watt max, and had a purplish light. My Gecko didn't mind sharing.

Being pretty much a newbie, may I ask why switch to reg. light during the day? Our babies were in a tuper tote in a bright day lit room.

Mine are usually in my laundry room or my storage room, neither of which get daylight, especially the storage room. Note that it was an OR.

Never too soon to start count down. I started counting the day my Lavender Am's pipped. That was 27 weeks ago.....and still counting down.

What kind of pullets?? The EE's and Mutts started laying about 19 weeks. I have some 20 week old Blue Rocks that don't even look close yet. But the 20 week old Black Sex Links are starting to redden up in the combs.

I have three Ameraucanas and one Black Copper Marans...all from Dar. In fact ALL my chickens are from Dar. The BCM doesn't look close, and I really cant tell with the Ameraucanas. Their combs get red close to lay? Maybe I'll take some pics and see what you think! I'm anxious! My family devoured a dozen eggs just this am for breakfast!

I am here---I just don't have anything to contribute. All my BYC time has been spent ACTUALLY TALKING & SPENDING TIME WITH BYC members.

You all are real people. Who knew?

Well if it is Pastrymama, we usually just toss a bunch of popcorn on the floor and let our kids go nuts.

Up until recently, my MIL lived in Tombstone, my BIL and his family are still based out of Sierra Vista (he works for the fire-retardant company and is out at Battle Mountain, NV right now) and my crazy ex-step-SIL Bellisamo is in Tombstone area.

I don't reccomend you hang out with Lisa though, she's nuts.

ETA-- my aunt lives in Hereford, and her husband just passed. She has one of the best telescopes in AZ in her backyard....go make nicenice and maybe she'll let you go in the observatory.

ETA---I also heard Victoria (formerly of Victorias B&B in Tombstone) was back in town. But she's just as bonkers as everyone else.

I think living in Cochise County makes you crazy. It's true.
