Pretty sure you won't get a harvest the first year, but it will give you okra for many years once it gets going. Okra is absolutely yummy, but a bit prickley, so be careful when tending. Okra gumbo is an absolute favourite dish of mine! Fried okra is pretty good, too.

Okra is a tender annual. It will die with our first freeze. I grow it every year.
You must save some of those seeds because I really want some red okra. I'll trade you, something.
BTW, does anybody want a lemongrass plant? They're very pretty. And, what do I do with it besides Tom yum soup?
Ca- that's terrible! I'm so sorry about your roo's. But, I'm glad it wasn't your Europeans.

I would take a lemon grass plant. I can't seem to get it to grow from seed!

My okra is producing---it is the ONLY thing that is producing. Everyhting else croaked! LOL!

Yesterday I kicked all the birds out of the meatie pen (at the end of the run). Today Shane tilled it while Chatterbox and I raked it. Then we planted a chicken garden! I put in buckwheat, mesculin, a gallon scoop of bird seed, and a package of "chicken garden" seeds someone sent me.

...the chickens do NOT like their reduced run size. I am really really really lookng forward to eating some of these turkeys. Really.

So, so sorry you lost roosters.

Sounds like your breeders were specialties. Did you have wire dug into the ground that they got under? Stupid coyotes, let 'em find their own dinner, not yours.

Aww...goats! I grew up with numerous full-size nubian goats and we also had a pygmy. So....how old? Are they male/female or neutered males (weathers) ? goats are very curious and intelligent, so they will get into or out of just about anything if your fencing isn't solid....and they can climb/jump. So your enclosure is really important....

also...ours ate "goat chow" (Purina I think?) as well as grazed on grasses, plants, and would eat some alfalfa in the winter. they will kill plants they like if you're not careful, and will eat rose bushes thorns and all....

I might be able to help some if I know more about how old they are, etc

Ok everyone...yes, the goats are adorable and yes, my hubby is fantastic...but sometimes I need a little warning - we were up til 11 last night making them a "suitable/temporary" enclosure.

the stats: goats are 10 & 4 months old, both males, & NEITHER neutered...soo smelly

So I know we can still cast. the younger one and get rid of his smell, but what about the older one?

I know, I know...this is for chickens - but I have those too. THANKS!!!

That sounds like quite the interesting day!
We should carpool!

Great idea. I'm all for that.

Does anybody near Mesa have some kefir grains that I could "share"? I have some sourdough starter that I could trade.

I do!
