Arizona Chickens

Another question:

If I have egg-eaters, will there be any remaining shell laying around or any other tell-tale signs? I've gotten maybe 4 eggs in the last 2 weeks. Finally got ONE last night after probably 5 days of none. I have 6 that are laying for sure & 2 other's that had better start poppin' em out pretty quick.

My DH switched their food, so maybe that's a problem?

Thanks

The best one I've seen is a you tube video. I think it's called how to respectfully butcher a chicken or something like that. The lady is wearing a pink scarf and the video is two parts. It shouldn't be too hard to find.

Yeah here is the link, I just watched and found this video really informative, I think it must be the one as she has a pink scarf

Most people raise them on 20-22% protein. Some of the organic feed has better protein. Also, the big reason they feed them that way is just to get them to grow fast. If you don't care about rapid growth, it doesn't matter. Peri Sally, I don't really care if I have a chicken ready to butcher in 42 days or less. I'm happy with 12 weeks, more is fine, even. That's why I think these red broilers will suit me just fine. They grow slower.

Slower is fine with me as well. I think we mis-typed some of the reds. I've got 3 with wing feathers and one with none.

Might this be 3 Production Reds & 1 Red Broiler or Visa Versa?

Just finished a 2X8 tractor for the chicks and put them out for an afternoon of sunshine. It was so cute to watch them discover grass and sun. The little brace in the middle of the tractor was a giant tree branch to fly over. Some of them wanted to take a siesta in the sunshine but their pesky brothers wouldn't let them. Too much to see and do!

I think the plain red ones are broilers and the ones with a little dark are the production reds. I suspect we may have to swap a chick. I only have one with any dark. Most of mine are plain red so I think they are the broilers. I think I have one with a little dark spot on the back of her head.

My 2 PRs have wing feathers and even little tail feathers so I would guess your 3 with wings are PRs.
What about yours Tracy? How many do you have developing wing and tail feathers?
