Arizona Chickens

Pastrymamma,
There are a few threads in the quail forums that suggest using Apple Cider Vinegar as a maintenance/ preventative for coccidiosis.

I just bought a bottle for my quail, all my birds actually. I can't say it works, but the one gal that suggested it, is a well respected/known quail breeder.

I did a google here on BYC and found many feel it works and has many health benefits.

Here's the thread I had started to ask questions about it for Quail.. I don't know how the amounts would be for chickens, but worth looking into.

I don't have chickens yet, due to hatch any day. :) but when I do, I was planning on using the Vinegar for them too.

Tammy wants to know if Rice vinegar (garlic flavored) will work...

No. Trader Joe's has the right kind of ACV, though. If you want it garlic flavored, (it's also good for them) you can drop some garlic into the bottle of vinegar.

I'm starting to suspect I have 2 roos of the 6.

One of the sex-links (believe it or not) and one of the PRs.
The sex link has all white feathers coming in on the body and only red in the wings and shoulders. The PR is getting tiny little red wattles but it was the first to feather.
Does anybody know at what age PRs cockerels combs redden? Mine are 4 weeks yesterday.

You need organic, with the 'mother' in it. I got Braggs brand at the health food store. New life.

Becky,
It's good to know it's helped yours. I'm going to start using it.

I am going to order Silkie, Serama , and D'uccle eggs this week! All will ship on Monday! Can't wait to have chicks!

Next question - Tammy would like to know what the justification for "organic apple cider vinegar" she says she has a chemical background and the vinegar is just an acid, is there any reason it must be organic or will the regular stuff work as well?

I wondered the same thing. lol...

I was told the organic is un filtered, and that what's called the 'mother' is the stuff that settles to the bottom of the jar, a culture of sorts that is used to start another batch. That is what has all the goodies . The 'mother' and the un filtered is what is important.

I hope that helps. It's still something that i'm researching and learning my self. Many people use it daily too. Add it to juice and drink it. Or water with honey.

i got my ACV at sprouts, when i was still using it. who knows, i may revisit that idea. OR, meg the witch doctor with her weird kombachubaca concoction may convert me

but i am NOT going to drink that fermented jar of spores. oh the migraine.........

Ahh! There it is: Tammy's new hobby.

Buy several kinds of vinegars (organic and not, with mother and without), give each to a handfull of unvaccinated chicks for a predetermined time period (all chicks same breed from the same order of course), have a control group, and study!

Where are the incidences with cocci occuring?
What are other health issues observed?
Weight gain?
Start of egg production?
Lifespan?

This is Tammy's future PhD

. Or maybe she writes a book about "The Value of Correct Chicken Vinegaration"
