Now I'm worried! That's the color of the new one we got today!

The chick doesn't seem to be eating much. Is this normal? I don't seem to feel any in his crop. He's active, and runs to the dish when I tap on it. pecks at a piece or 2 then is more interested in my fingernail.

It only hatched yesterday around 10am.

boy I'm not that experienced with chicks (have raised some but not hatched, etc) but is the food small enough/chick mash? I've never just had one, but have noticed that they encourage each other to eat, almost like they're competing for food? If one has something that looks tasty the other one wants it too....

Maybe if this chick is all alone it's not getting the same amount of encouragement to eat?? Maybe it is still newly hatched enough that it doesn't need to eat much yet (isn't it about 3 days??)

Anyone have better insight?

I was wondering if it just doesn't need to eat yet due to the fact they can go a day or 2 absorbing what's left of the egg yolk/sack.
It's not alone. Yesterday after putting it in the brooder, we gave it 2 baby quail for company, until this afternoon, when we got a 1 week old chick to go in with it.

I do know they are little piggies and want what the others have! LOL!

Feed store didn't have mash, but I ran what I do have through a little food chopper so I know it's small enough. It's the same size the little quail are eating.

We'll see how it goes. I'm thinking mainly it just doesn't need to eat yet. but you know how new mommies worry.

They really will not eat allot until day 2 or 3 and mainly just putter around exploring and sleeping the first 24 hours as the absorb the rest of the nutrients they are born with. Everything sounds normal so far....

Right after I make a penis sweater - I heard about an old lady who sold them at craft shows (all sizes and colors).

I have to say, the pic of the mom looking through the window was just heartbreaking.

What a great story, thanks for sharing that with us!

NOT looking. It's Hannah's sixth birthday and if I'm gonna get teary eyed it'll be about that, TYVM.

Speaking of your kids, when do we get to see the great feather hair clips?
