So, where do you find cayenne seeds? I mean, I know the dry peppers from the Mexican section of the grocery has a lot of seeds in it. Are you just going to use those?
I give a lot of melon, squash and pumpkin seeds. They probably get melon seeds once a day all summer, once or twice a week in the winter. Squash seeds not as often but still probably twice a month. I've heard they're pretty helpful, too. My peppers didn't produce much but are starting to take off. I'll start throwing the seeds into the chicken bucket so they'll get the seeds. Don't know if it will be enough but if I do a batch of habanero gold they'll get a good dose all at once.

So far I'm using those red pepper flakes and jalapeno pepper seeds.

Will, do you really use just seeds? or the red pepper flakes with seeds?

Beckyhsinglsc, I think I spelled that right.. (spelling is not my forte).. I buy the peppers with the flakes, and throw all of it in the bowl, but they don't seem to eat the flakes, just the seeds.. I get my peppers from the grocery store, but you have to check the ingredients closely.. Most of the packages are just red pepper, without the cayenne.. My mother always said it had to be the cayenne.. She also said to use about a half a teaspoon for each chicken..I don't know why.. I never did ask her.. Here in Deming, we have a store called "Peppers Supermarket", and they have a very good selection of peppers available in almost every combination... Will...

edited bacause I can't type straight either... lol

Hmmm... Mine just say "crushed red pepper". Probably the wrong thing.

I'll look for cayenne tomorrow.

After more research...

What I have is McCormick's Crushed Red Pepper
From their website:
Crushed Red Pepper, a fiery member of the Capsicum pepper family, was discovered in the New World. Grown in Asia, it has a characteristic reddish color and a hot, pungent flavor.
Ground Red Pepper, sometimes called Cayenne, is the dried, ground pod of a Capsicum pepper. Discovered in the New World, it has a hot, pungent flavor and is imported from Asia.

So they should be the same thing.

I also have some ground cayenne that smells just like the flakes.
I think I'm going to sneeze.

Gallo del Cieo,
I don't cut up my jalapenos.. The chickens hop up on my container, (2' high x 2' diameter) and steal the peppers from the plant.. Then, they play keep-away with each other.. They strip off all of the peppers on the lower half of the plant, and most of the leaves.. I get the peppers from the top half.. They eat most of the pepper, and leave the stem part.. I screened off my bell peppers..
I also feed them yellow squash two or three times a week, when they get too big and pithy.. I take a slice off of one side, and hang it like a cabbage.. They clean it to the skin in the same day I hang it..
If I get a watermelon that is overripe, I'll split it in half, and give half to the chickens, and half to my donkey.. When they finish their half, they go and try to steal the donkeys half..
Everything grows well here, and I always plant too much anyway, so I always have more than I can use.. And, the neighbors can only take so much off of my hands, (there are only two that are close enough to share with).. We are a little remote here... Will...

I don't know Becky.. I'm far from being an expert on this.. I just follow my mothers directions from when she was alive.. I've found that my chickens eat the pepper seeds, and leave the flakes, but I mix it into a bowl of scratch.. If it was mixed into a bowl of yogurt, I would imagine they would eat all of it.. Hummmmm, That way, I could feed it to my dogs as well.. I wonder if it would work for canines as well.?.. Will...

eta... I do know that this thread has a lot more smarts than I do, and I have learned a lot from all of you.. I was merely putting in my two cents worth, (and it may not be worth two cents), about the way it was done back in the 50's and 60's by my mother, and she always had a lot of chickens with no problems at all, (except predators, of course)... Will...

Great! I always have a giant container of those. Can mix them with some kefir and melon seeds.

My experience with dogs is that peppers are about the only thing they really won't eat. That and large amounts of vinegar. My Doberman, I swear she has an overeating disorder. She tries to eat things that have tobasco, makes faces but keeps going back until she's finished it.
