Arizona Chickens

I have ordered from Ideal and bought chicks at Mesa Feed Barn(which they ordered from Ideal). Pretty happy with both.
When you order you usually get some extra boys as packing peanuts, though, unless you are ordering a large number. I've had 30 "pullet" chicks so far over the past 3 years and only 2 mistakes(boys).
If you get them from a feed store, I would suggest finding out which day they come in and getting them that day so you can give them a good start.

I will have to check out Mesa Feed Store. Years ago I went to a place in Glendale off of Glendale road, I think Pratts Feed & Supply. They had a bunch of chicks in bins. When we order chickens we only want 6 pullets. I think that will be enough to get us up and rolling. Thanks for the recommendation.

I thought about getting chicks but since I was working full time decided to just get ready-to lay-pullets from people advertising online on CL. I've seen chicks at the Mesa Feed Barn, Pet Club (County Club and 1st St in Mesa). These two places seem to get regular shipments of chicks, also turkeys and ducks sometimes.

I'm thinking some of the folks here who incubate may have chicks from time to time if you can wait and don't have your own schedule. I think they would be better quality than other places and more support if you need it. And you don't need to buy 25 minimum to have them shipped like at the hatcheries.

I think I will check out Mesa Feed barn when we are closer to being ready for chicks. I was looking at some places on line- but we only want 6 chicks to start with. And I see some places where you have to order more then 6.

I've purchased chicks three times from Mesa Feed Barn and had zero problems. All turned out to be hens and healthy. I try to be there the day they arrive or the day after and just pick ones that seem to be spry. I think they usually come in on Wednesdays. They can tell you when by phone.
