Our wheaten Marans layed her first egg on Monday, took pictures but now I need to figure out how to get them from the camera to the computer.

Bearded silkies have very small, nearly non-existent wattles (the bearded gene reduces the size of wattles); non-bearded silkies typically have fairly large wattles. Without a photo, I would not hazard a guess on gender, and maybe not even then. But I would say that wattles are not really a reliable indicator in silkies.

From your description, it sounds like the chicks are probably blue.

Wow really! How did breeding a white to a pratridge give me blue chicks. Here is a not to good of a photo of one of the dark chicks. Maybe I should send one of Tumbleweed to see if he really is a pratridge. I will also get one of the buff chick I think is roo. Maybe you could tell.

Here is pictures I just took of Tumbleweed and his young flock. Now he is a pratridge right? Note the small ones with Cotton! I love this picture!

I've seen those in our Lee Lee's and I've always been curious as to the taste. But then it's been a few years separation since I had my silkies so that probably plays into it.

Is it ewweee that they have fresh dressed silkie in the poultry section of Lee Lee's Market?

Yes, feed stores will often order what is requested, but with the breeds mentioned, there is a pretty good chance that they are or will be already carried at one store or another. Pam in Goodyear raises exhibition Ameraucanas; I do not know if she has or will sell youngsters, though.

Yes, Tumbleweed is a male; you knew that ;)

I am not going to hazard a gender guess on any of the immatures--wait and sooner or later each bird will crow or lay--right now they do not look mature enough for me to make a good guess from photos--in person--maybe, but even then no certainty.

"Chickens are our Friends, NOT our Food." So yes, Meg, it is definitely EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!
