What happens when you feed your breeders Skittles?

I want some of these!!

I just had a huge hatch & need to sell some babies FAST!!!! I have blue & black frizzles, buff partridge, blue partridge, lavenders, splash, and many more colors. They are from a project of mine. They are all silkie mixes with either polish or cochin. They are really cool looking. Most have smooth feathers but come in Tons of cool colors. I have baby chicks from days old to month or two. They range from $7 up to $12 for the older ones. I might have a mottled frizzle & a partridge or two frizzle for sale as well.

Come take a look or send me a PM. I have way too many chicks, they need to go , overflown brooders.. : )

The 2 week olds have been climbing into their feeder and kicking (scratching?) out their feed.

I have one of those mini bulk feeders - the metal "rabbit type" feeder.

I'm a kinda reasonable guy.

I've had a talk with the wee ones but they just don't seem to get the message.

STOP WASTING FEED!

Maybe I'm not speaking clearly enough?

OMG...I know what you mean. I do scratch and mash mixed 50/50. My husband built the treadle feeder and I propped it open as suggested for training. Those darn chicks got in and scratch out over a gallon of feed all over the ground. I closed the box and are making them clean up before their allow to get it propped open again. They won't starve, they're just going to have to use their instincts to forage and eat my left over veggies from dinner. Darn chicks are messy. Between them and my kids I think we've wasted about 25# of food. UGGG

I hope everyone had a great weekend with their chickens. My laying hen, laid me 6 eggs last week. I was really hoping for another duel egg find in the nesting box yesterday morning but she only laid me one. 6 eggs in 7 days, I can live with that from one chicken. I was really hoping to sneak in another laying hen this weekend but my husband is adamant about no more chickens. Only (hopefully) 4-6 months until all or most are laying.

This morning I let all the chicks, pullets and hen out of their respectable homes to roam the yard. I keep the dog out because if the hen goes in the brooder she will scare her out and she will also chase any other birds that enter the yard. She also thinks it's her job to make sure the pullets and chicks stay close to their homes. Anyhow, I go out there about an hour after letting them all out and find the head of the pecking order chick inside the coop on the perch. She managed to find her way into the run, up the ramp and into the coop. Too funny. She is two and a half weeks younger than the pullets and has already let the head pullet know she's in for some competition. They are 5 weeks and 7.5 weeks old.

Thanks to Mikey I have some oyster shells for my laying hen, without having to buy a 50# bag and having to find a place to store it and some wheat germ for starting my meal worm colonies. I'll be establishing 11 colonies and selling 10 once established. I have a guest room with an empty closet. Might as well get some use out of that space. I was really surprised that my husband was okay with this plan as he's really not okaywith the whole chicken idea. However, I did catch him putting his fingers through the chicken wire to see if the chickens would come to him. He quickly backed away when I headed outside with some worms for him to give them. HAHAHAHA.

I was having the same issue so a put a plastic dish under it to catch the feed that they kick out and then the less aggressive ones eat of the pan. There is still a little waste but not as much as before.

Hey everyone, just a note for anyone wanting to participate in the BYC Easter Hatch-Along. I may have extra Aloha eggs available then. Looking for new breeders - but if you can't house roos or aren't interested in the project, I would be forever grateful for anyone who would consider hatching some chicks to raise, and donating the very best hen per dozen eggs donated back to the breeding program. You'd be welcome to keep the rest.

In a nutshell, this project was started to try and re-create something like Swedish Flower Hens in America. A couple years after I started it, Greenfire imported actual Swedish Flower Chickens, but now these are starting to look really neat, and they come in some colors that Swedish Flower Hens don't come in. So I've decided to keep going with the project.

Here is more info:

I also have a Blog with more info - see my sig.

Thanks!

Sommer
