but like you said on those basque, the males are feathering in faster than the female. darn it. i am going to call her to see if she has any more from that batch. do you want an extra roo? really, i can't have 3 roos. these chickies are way too expensive to eat.
No I can't take another roo, having a hard time getting rid of the current ones. If she still has some from the same batch and you are filthy rich maybe get enough to sell as starter trios? I would like another pullet, wishful thinking I know! Hope you come back home to a cleaned house, all the kids fast asleep, and whatever else would make your night go better.

I've decided on a name for the smaller of my two Buff Orpington chicks. She's 'Buffy', not because of her color, but because she clearly is almost supernaturally smart and tough, after she survived for almost twenty-four hours loose in the backyard.

Since the chicks are almost three weeks old, I've taken to letting them run around the yard while I'm cleaning the brooder and so on. Yesterday, I decided to take the plastic tray out of the bottom of the brooder (my brooder is a large wire dog kennel) and hose it off. So, they were out running around for a couple of hours while I was in and out of the back yard while I did housework. Then, I go out to make sure they have food and water, get them back into the brooder, and so on. I find all of them in the brooder, except for the smaller of the two Buff Orpington chicks. So I start looking and listening. No sign of the chick. I get my kids to come look with me. No sign of her. Finally, after about half an hour, we gave up, figuring that she'd gotten eaten by a cat or otherwise met a sad end.

Then, this afternoon, I go outside, and I start hearing what sounds like a chick's distressed peeping, so I look all over the place, and can't find her at all. After doing this for awhile, I decide to just open up the brooder, hoping that maybe she and the rest of her flock will find each other. I go out to run some errands, and come back and sure enough, there she is with the rest of the chicks. I have no idea where she was or how she did it, but she somehow managed to survive on her own for almost an entire day, including being on her own overnight.

A sunken garden
Begins and ends with a hole
What next for this void?

TT!'s sweet verses:

Once upon a time
This hole was more than a hole
It was a garden

there was another, but it would get me banned.

What next for this void? This most perfect hole? Let's see.......

a. Basement level of your new chicken highrise
b. A perfect spot for your new fire-pit cooking classes
c. The new home of the "How to dig a perfect rectangle" demonstration site
d. Proof for why a t-square should be part of every gardeners toolkit
e. Chicken lap pool

I'm sure there are many more possibilties.

LareePQG, That fan looks great! I think I have to have one.

AZKat, What a great story! It makes you wonder what that chick experienced. What a lucky chick!

pimachickens, Honestly, no squares were used in digging the hole. Except the one doing the digging.

Novaleigh, The coop's looking great! Congratulations on the new birds too!

Hi All,

New AZ Egg here and a first time poster. Like most around here, my flock last year went from 4 to 9 quickly and two of those happen to be cockerels (not by choice). But that is a different story. Living in AZ and raising chickens definitely has different challenges than most other states.

With the heat of the summer coming up in a few months, I want to re-do how I water my team. Does anyone have some creative ideas on how to keep the water cool and clean?

1) I am concerned with the chicken nipples and PVC that the water would be super hot.

2) Currently, I have a trough with a float I bought off eBay to water the clan. I thought of drilling a hole in the bottom of the opposite side and connecting a sprinkler valve that I can automatically turn on/off for a minute a couple times a day. Is this overkill?

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas?

-Regman

Welcome Regman!

I have a line plumbed into a home depot bucket with a float inside and 4 nipples on the bottom.

It needs a cleaning out once every 2 months but I anticipate being able to fill it with ice for the summer.
