The kids had left the two side gates open, and a neighbor's cockapoo got in and killed them all. I ran outside when I heard them squawking in distress, and by the time I'd gotten there he was running out of the yard with the last one in his mouth. I think that all the pullets are ok, I could only find seven of them, I'm hoping that the missing three are just hiding really well. I'm just absolutely sick about this.

Update: All ten pullets are accounted for. One has a few torn tail feathers, but they are otherwise unharmed.

Thanks for the wishes peeps. I checked the rest this afternoon & Princess (one of the wellsummers) has an eye glued shut as well. I put her in with the first Spitz and am adding Tetracycline to the water.

I've not got time to check the 2 pages of posts, will do that when we get back. (B'day dinner with my dad, he's 74)

I guess I had to run into difficulty some time.

Prayers for the peepers.

Mikey

mikey, a few links because i can't help but read when something goes astray. don't know if you have other symptoms or not, gallo is much better at this than i am. he seemed to be right on the money when i lost 7 back in december. i can't remember what it was but it did not have eye involvement at all.

sorry mikey. did you quarrantine the new birds you bought at the show last month for 4 weeks and then throw in a sacrificial bird with them for a while to see what would happen, if anything? sounds nuts, but i have learned my lesson the hard way in the past. i even quarrantined birds from a very trusted breeder the full month and then tossed in a few of my own just to be sure. i have all my basque chicks in quarrantine and they are chicks! i just don't like to lose them. some things you can't prevent, you just do your best.

Great to know Dr. Burke will work on chickens. I knew he was a great Vet with a great reputation. I know many of my customers that swear by him. By the way I own the Water And Ice store in the same plaza that his office is located so he is nice and convenient if I ever need him. If any of you are in the area stop by and introduce yourselves to me.

My chickens won't sleep or roost at night in their coop. They sleep together on the ground in their fenced in run. Is this normal? I keep picking them up and moving them into the coop but they keep getting out and sleep in the run. I don't keep food or water in the coop so I don't lock them in at night cause I don't want to get up at the crack of dawn to let them out. Their coop is in an enclosed 6 x 14 foot dog run so safety isn't an issue. Do I just have strange chickens or what? They will be 12 weeks old tomorrow.

If I just HAPPENED to have some fertile Blue Laced Red Wyandotte eggs, is someone willing to incubate them, or do I have to bite the bullet and get an incubator? The Brinsea Mini EX looked good but pricey...not that I've been looking.

But remember...I know NOTHING about incubating and I'd probably kill 'em all.

Buy the new Genesis Hovabator 1588 with the turner. It now has electronic readouts.

And join the Easter Hatch!

@AZKat - How horrible! I'm so sorry!

@AZChicken - I have the Genesis. Just finishing up a hatch in it. I love that all I have to do is just check the humidity. I just can't wait until I don't have to rely on shipped eggs.

Have you ever seen my yard? We started with ONE chicken--Henrietta CAME with the house when we bought it. Bought FOUR chicks for the kids for Easter; in researching chick care, discovered silkies; a neighbor gave me one more from a preschool hatching; two more at the feed store demanded that we take them home with us. A year later bought TWO SILKIES and had them shipped from a breeder in Wisconsin.

I now have 3 coops in the west yard, plus several chickens as well as two geese and three muscovies tht roam there uncooped. A back porch full of cages, an open pen and a tractor in the central portion of the yard, seven tractors (most semi-permanently positioned) and six coops in the east yard. I've probably forgotten or under counted somewhere. Oh yeah, a bunch of the rocks roam the yard at will, and I have a horse stall full of chickens also.

That's awesome!
