Arizona Chickens

WOW! Gone for a day or two (or maybe more? LOL, time flies!) and I have so many pages to catch up on!

I have a bit of a problem on my hands. Sweety, our little barred rock roo, is sweet to everyone but the newest members of our flock! I noticed this behavior ever since we got our new roo, Tommy Love (the roo that AZKat was kind enough to bring us from Mahonri, whom we absolutely adore!). He fully submits to Tommy Loves top spot in the pecking order, but seems to try and take it out on anyone smaller then him. Tommy Love does NOT do that to anyone smaller then him, he seems to keep a protective watchful eye on all the flock (including Sweety and the young chicks/ducks/turkeys). Sooo, how old should we wait for Sweety to be before he gets put in the freezer? His drumsticks are awful sparse, but at the same time, his behavior is unacceptable. Should I process him next week with AZKat's group of feral roos? Is Sweety too young to be processed?

I wish I only used 250 lb per month! I do through that in about a week!

Quote:
Just order the # & type of feed in 50 lb increments.

This run through I'm going to get 150 lbs of layer chick starter and 100 lbs of layer mash.

I laughed when Tracy ordered 1000 lbs.

I stopped laughing when I had to load it in her SUV!

She said she only had 2 bags left when she had to reorder.

That is probably what I go through in a month...I DO remember when 50 lb seemed like a lifetime supply...

How old is Sweety? Does Tommy Love run over and intervene when there is a scuffle going on?

It turned out that the RIR wasn't the only egg eater I had

. Today, I caught one of the White Leghorns orange beaked as she was eating an egg. This really sucks, both because of the egg eating, and because this is the first major problem I've had with my flock. I processed her right away, and I really hope I don't have to cull any more birds.

That stinks! I've heard that it can be very habit forming for the rest.

I have an incubator question. My niece is planning to get a hovabator; if you had to choose between circulated air and automatic turning, which would you select and why. My sportsman does both, and it is the only incubator I've ever had that worked. (built two and bought one of the super cheapies--waste of time, money and eggs.)

I would choose automatic turner simply because of the pain it would be to keep opening the lid to hand turn them at least 3 times a day. I think the sudden temp. changes from doing that would be worse of then no air movement. Now if one was to build a turner that would turn all the eggs at once... well that's a different story.

Here is a breakdown of the main feed choices for the bulk organic:
Shipping is included

15% Organic NON-SOY Layer Mash - 50lb bag - $20.44
16% Organic Layer Mash - 50lb bag - $21.30

17% Organic Chick Layer Starter - 50lb bag - $21.98
15% Organic Chick Layer Grower - 50lb bag - $20.85
22% Organic Broiler Chick Starter - 50lb bag - $25.49
20% Organic Broiler Chick Grower - 50lb bag - $24.09
17% Organic Broiler Chick Finisher - 50lb bag - $22.11
14% Organic Scratch - 50lb bag - $21.39

I'm still leaning towards the 17% layer starter although it was suggested I go with the 15% layer grower.

I figure for the extra four bucks why not get the good stuff...

I think I'm going to have to put together another treadle feeder
