Arizona Chickens

Now you see what I was talking about! that chicken needs a paper bag on it head!! It is really sweet. My daughter just saw it too. In her paninc voice she said "Mommy what is wrong with it!" She did like the sebastipols (I am sure I spelled that wrong!) and the tire swing!

Just for you Mikey!

I'm also thinking of submitting this photo for "stink-eye of the year" Whatcha' think?

(By the way, this is his "good" side. You should see the other. I would have photographed it, but was afraid it would break the camera.

Sonoran - I love ALL of God's creatures. But that duck...

and yes, that IS his good side.

Still no chicks here. :( Today is day 21...ish. My dates are prob a little off, how long should I wait? I'm getting kinda bummed. Anyone have some chicks I can give her? I feel so bad for her!

Went to check on the livestock before calling it a night and found that my broody hen that hatched 6 chicks about 3 weeks ago had pecked at two of her chicks and they are bleeding. The first chick has both wings that are bloody and missing feathers. It's back is bloody and also it's butt. The second chick has one wing and underneath it are bleeding, but that is it. The other four are ok and this Icelandic mom has always seemed a bit rough with her chicks. I pulled the mom and put her back in the main coop. I brought the hurt chicks inside. I am not sure what happened. Has anyone had this happen before?

I had it happen with my cockatiels when the babies were starting to feather out. The parents started plucking all the blood feathers on the largest chick. I made the mistake of only pulling the hurt chick and the parents killed the rest of the babies a few hours later. Guess they wanted to start a new clutch - the mom began laying eggs again the next day. Sounds like your momma chicken isn't cut out to be a momma. Hatching eggs is one thing. Raising chicks is another. Maybe she got tired of the kids talking back?

BTW, I still have the little guy I pulled from that nest. He turned 18 a couple of months ago. There is hope for the chicks!

The Pima County Fair is coming up soon. Years ago I went and there were LOTS of chickens (and pigeons and other birds) on display. I fell in love with the prettiest pair of chickens I ever saw. I think they were Dutch silver (silverwing?) bantams. That started me on the path to wanting chickens. Be careful what you wish for. Now I have four chickens inherited from a friend who had to move. I can feel the chicken math kicking in. And the fair is coming up again. The problem is, every time I've been to the fair since that year I haven't found much in the way of poultry. I thought I just wasn't going on the right day, but I don't see any mention of poultry on the county fair website, either. Does anyone know if there is a poultry component to the livestock show? And if so, when is it? Sheep and pigs are ok, but I'd rather see chickens.
