Arizona Chickens

Yes, after being around them I liked them more. They are so quiet. But they are not winning any beauty pagents that is for sure. If pastry has confirmed they help with flies in a few months I may be getting some. Our neighbors have horses and a steer and soon to get pigs for the fair. Last summer we had flies so BAD.

I used to think muscovies were nice, gentle birds until I watched one kill and eat a house sparrow fledgling.

That incident redefined my concept of ducks as sweet, innocent yummies for predators. They're actually pretty effective predators in their own right. They might be really good at fly control.

Went to check on the livestock before calling it a night and found that my broody hen that hatched 6 chicks about 3 weeks ago had pecked at two of her chicks and they are bleeding. The first chick has both wings that are bloody and missing feathers. It's back is bloody and also it's butt. The second chick has one wing and underneath it are bleeding, but that is it. The other four are ok and this Icelandic mom has always seemed a bit rough with her chicks. I pulled the mom and put her back in the main coop. I brought the hurt chicks inside. I am not sure what happened. Has anyone had this happen before?

Chickens are like some people. They get crazy sometimes. I guess if you were kept in a coop, jumped on and raped by a rooster, abused by a more dominate hen, you would be a little strange too.

Quote: Unfortunely I too have had terrible things happen. One of my broodies just pecked both of her new chicks eye out and pecked a hole in the back of the others head. I lost the eye one but the head one id doing fine now that i brought thme inside. I do not know what to do about it ??? Mine does it as soon as the chix start to hatch. Does anyone know why this happens or what to do ? Well besides incubation? Should I get rid of this hen? Although 2 of my others have started to do this too.

I wouldn't necessarily get rid of her, but I would make sure she never has access to chicks again.

I am sooo looking forward to the fair and seeing all the animals. Hoping I can make some connections for chicks. Trying to hatch shipped eggs is killing me.

Most serious breeder/exhibitors do not sell chicks or eggs (certainly there are exceptions). What you are likely to be able to find is people from whom you can purchase mature birds, and then breed your own.

So I've been searching this thread for information on the food grade DE to get rid of the flies and found all the references to Sevin that it works better for killing bugs. According to the labeling on Sevin though (found at Lowes) it says to keep it away from pets. Is there a different version that everyone is referring to? Cactus Feed by me didn't have any full bags of the DE so they just gave me what was left in a 40# bag (a couple hand fulls).

Puffycheeks, Phx zoo or Wild Life World Zoo? They also had a pet vulture.
Well I am among the very disappointed people sense so far all I got hatched is one lone Silky chick. I keep hoping for we have a day left but doesn't look good. All the eggs of my 32, 24 went to lockdown with full eggs. Only one hatched.
