Arizona Chickens

I discovered today that the Spits have blue ears.

Not the totally cool iridescent blue of the silkies (hopefully not yet

)...

but blue nonetheless.

I let them out (unsupervised) for the first time today. All was well.

I hope to get to the drug store for iron-less pedia vitamins for Flopsy tomorrow.

Did anyone see this the last time? Or this time?

My production red has a new name.

Her name is Meow!

She sounds broody!

Actually, silkies should have 10 toes, lol.

Seriously, though, six toed birds are fine for breeding, and 4-toed ones can be okay, too. Incubation temperature during the first few days can cause incorrect number of toes, even when the bird is pure for polydactyly. With a 6 toed bird you KNOW the gene is present.

lol thats right I was refering to 5 on one foot

Glad you all had fun with my post!

Unfortunately the chick was dead this morning. The poor rooster Hawkeye is worse and still acts partially blind. I think we will loose him.

I set some eggs yesterday I got from Bootsie. Trying again to hatch some ameraucanas. Thanks Bootsie! I pretty much know what went wrong with my Easter hatch. Hope I have a good hatch this time for planning on keeping one rooster and all the hens.
I really think this black silky is a hen. She is 8 weeks old. What does everyone think? Also she is a purebred silky right? Has all the toes she needs. The others are silkies also and they are from the same hatch.HEY my rooster Tumbleweed has 6 toes on one of his feet!

HI, all of those chicks look pure silkie, but what about the ones I got from you? What are they mixed with? I know you said they came from eggs from someone else. Do you know the parentage? Neither of them have any silkie look to them at all

. By the way, how is my little boy

doing? Also I was wondering, how BIG is he getting? Sorry about Hawkeye.

Hi Kat, I think maybe you should bring that black chick back. Folks are calling it cockerel and so is the silver one. Come to think of it you will not want any of Cottons hatch black ones for they are the ones with missing toes.

I want to get him back soon for I don't want the other chickens to forget who he is and not except him back.

I was wondering about that crest , sure looks straight up , my girls all had cotton ball tops more rounded. Well he is a great baby sitter and very loveable and sweet. BUMMER I need pullets

Okay, what I meant was how many generations of a closed flock have you had. From our answer, it sounds like it really isn't a many generations closed flock, just those two for their lifetime.

Also, looking at Papa, he is cuckoo, looks to have two copies of barring, each significantly diluting the skin. If you look at his skin, it is probably quite light. He may not even carry Fm, and if that is the case, they will only inherit from Mama.

Look underneath the feathers on his body, and what colour is Papa's skin. Also look at his legs, and what colour are they?
