Arizona Chickens

Where are you at? I'm not sure if this will help but I'm in Tucson and will be going to Phoenix Airport the evening of the 15th. I could go earlier and pick up chicks if you are close to me.

Just saw you are in E Tucson. I'm NW but I'm sure we could figure out a pick up place if you don't mind waiting.
I might just PM Sonoran Silkies about a few chicks too !!

Wow! I am surprised at all the people willing to help! This should work, I'll talk to Puffycheeks and the omnipotent parents.

Does anyone know where I can buy food grade DE in Tucson? Ants have discovered my coop/run. I have non-food-grade DE but everyone on BYC says use food grade stuff around the chickens. Not totally sure what the difference is. No time to order online - the ants will discover the feeder before anything can get delivered.

My chickens love cockroaches but seem totally uninterested in eating ants. Just wait until their layer pellets start marching out the coop one at a time.

I just (almost) finished building my first ever construction project, a grow up pen for my babies that are too big for the house and was wondering how big of a roost I should use . How big around and also how high from the ground? After I install that it will be done!!!

You should be good with 2 inch x 2 inch about 8 to 12 inches up depending on their size.

I have purchased food grade DE at AZ Country Feed Store at 4743 N Highway Drive. They also have a store at 2701 S 6th Avenue, which I'm sure sells the same stuff...although I have never been to that one. Good Luck!

Swimming pool DE is much worse for breathing, and is far less effective at drying. Get a product for ants. DE will do very little to help.

You really do not want your birds eating ants. The formic acid in them is toxic. A few ants wouldn't cause too much of a problem, but more than a few and you could be looking at seriously ill birds.

O.K. Feeds has it at Ft. Lowell and Dodge at a great price too. We just eradicated a number of ant colonies in our yard last month using it. It takes a while, but with our dry weather for the foreseeable future, it will work. The worst colony I had problems with took just over a week. They had set up shop in the tree well at the base of my new Monukka seedless grape and ate every green part on it.

Those took slightly longer than the others to kill because I watered the grape after a few days of first applying the DE. DE won't be as effective (or maybe not work at all) as monsoon season approaches and the humidity rises.

You dont want to use the regular DE , for pools, etc., as it had been polished and is useless for any type of inscet control and it may also have additives. The food grade is like a microscopic snowflake with very sharp but microscopic edges and that is what works on the insects. The sharp edges make small cuts in the insect skin and then it dehydrates and "croaks". You can actually feed the food grade to all your pets, as well as dust them with it for alittle insect control. Some of us actually put it in our chickens dust baths! It works pretty good and works alot better on some insects than others. Good luck!
